Jayden Nunn commits

Good Johnson is a Big 12 starter. Bad Johnson isn’t even a MVC level starter. Unfortunately it seems like he either looks like he has NBA potential or he looks like he’s never played basketball before. One of the weirdest players I can remember at ISU. If he could somehow always play like he did at Texas, vs Baylor and Texas Tech he’d be a very solid piece.
He was also the best player in the floor the majority of the Iowa Game until Garza went off.

Hunter, Bolton, Hinson, and Foster are the only people associated with the program who should be retained. Everyone else should be shown the door, immediately.

I think the harsh truth is that this is mostly true, I'd say right now, you may be even being liberal with this statement. The reality is, even out of those 4, Bolton is the only proven Big 12 commodity. Hinson's SEC experience should translate, I expect Hunter is going to be great and Foster looks like he has potential but there are still valid question marks around those 3. Hinson isn't a traditional sit out guy, he'll have not even practiced in a team setting for over a year. Hunter is obviously a frosh and Foster has played 55 minutes in his career, both will have really unfair expectations based solely on potential and recruiting rankings.

The rest of the roster is pretty meh, I'd like to see a couple of the fr stick around, I think their size and athleticism gives them potential but the rest of the guys have bench/role player ceilings. You need a guy or two like that but we've seen this year, you can't start 3 guys like that and expect to be competitive. I'd like to see two of Conditt/Johnson/Harris stick around for depth but none are needle movers for the program going forward.

It's a huge IF but IF you landed 2 legit, big 12 caliber starting players through the portal to pair with this group of 8/9 guys, you could be competitive next year.

The biggest benefit to retaining around 8/9 guys is, the new coach wouldn't be in the scramble that Prohm found himself in trying to constantly turn over the roster. Even with the two great teams he inherited, Prohm was still trying to fill 4 or 5 spots every year, that lead to him reaching on recruits to try to keep up with the programs expectations, which lead to more guys leaving who weren't cut out of the big 12, which lead to more open schollies. Throw in a couple of guys leaving early for good reasons and it can go downhill fast.

I think there are coaches who can handle that but its not an easy task. Prohm struggled here for lots of reason but this was one of the biggest reasons. Turnover is commonplace with coaching changes these days but it'd be nice if we limit that cycle of roster turnover for the the next coach. It's really tough to maintain success when you are turning over 4/5 roster spots every year, the Fred blueprint is outdated, at ISU, we can't rely on a quick fix every year.

I hope Walker stays.
I also don't think anyone should be "shown the door." I expect some will choose to leave.

Yeah, I can understand the desire to start with a clean slate both on the coaching staff and the roster, but whoever the new coach is can't just snap his fingers and sign up a bunch of transfers who are all even just Big 12 Honorable Mention kind of talent right away, no matter how good of a recruiter he might be. Like it or not, I don't think there is going to be a huge infusion of brand new talent coming in that we can get super excited about. I think it's important for some of our current roster, even if it's just a couple of role players, to stick around for continuity's sake.

After thinking a bit I've revived my lineup

Starters
G Hunter
G Bolton
G Walker
W Hinson
F Foster

Bench
G Nunn
G Harris
W ???
F Conditt

9 is a little deep for Prohm ( and I know he's a big if) but I think we need some size at the 4 to not continually get destroyed on the boards. My hope is Applewhite if that doesn't happen hopefully Dubar or Blackwell develop beyond Johnson.

Neither big has shown the ability to avoid foul trouble so we're probably going to need a transfer to at minimum defend, rebound and eat minutes.

The positive is our backcourt if we can retain those five. Hopefully having Hunter and Walker as starters cuts our turnover pandemic to to a level we can deal with.

Does this group win the conference no, but they should be able to get back to middle of the pack which would be a huge step forward.

Honest question here; did you create this lineup under the presumption that Prohm will be retained next season?

Until he isn’t that's the only thing to speculate. Yes, I understand it's 50/50 or best but I believe JP would like to get the stands full again before he spends money. Campbell's extention is a great sign but he still has to pay for it.

Fair enough, but JP is not going to get stands full again if he retains Prohm.

Football stands. This is where the real money crunch is.

Basketball will be down some, 11k v. 14k. Until (if) they get back to competitive. But that doesn't hamstring the athletic department.

I don’t think a new coach leads to quite as much overturn as people act like. Yes of course people will leave just like any other year, but some guys will hear the coach out and like the idea of starting for a P6 team. Some guys will realize they aren’t P6 level players and go to a smaller school. I’m not sure how many people would transfer and start at a good school.

I’m adding Walker and Javan to that list. Walker is a freshman guard that had 14 rebounds against KU.. that’s impressive. Javan, when he is playing well, can be a solid piece on a good team.

I would add Dubar with Walker and Javan. Would really like to see how he would develop with a coach that coaches and demands effort.

That is why he's an instant offense (aka the Microwave) off the bench kind of player. Let him go in guns ablaze; if he's hitting, keep him in; if he's not, sit him down.

If Prohm is around, I think Jaden Walker will start over JJ. Prohm likes him a lot. Jaden seems to be the guy that wants to get better so much that he puts the time in after hours. Assuming that continues, he'll end up being very good as a result of his work ethic maxing out his solid natural athletic abilities.

I agree with all of this. Javan is a better scorer but Walker is a better rebounder, ball handler and defender. They both need to cut down in their turnovers though. They can be solid pieces if we put some more talented players around them.

Jaden will be a very good college player
