Hunter, Bolton, Hinson, and Foster are the only people associated with the program who should be retained. Everyone else should be shown the door, immediately.
I think the harsh truth is that this is mostly true, I'd say right now, you may be even being liberal with this statement. The reality is, even out of those 4, Bolton is the only proven Big 12 commodity. Hinson's SEC experience should translate, I expect Hunter is going to be great and Foster looks like he has potential but there are still valid question marks around those 3. Hinson isn't a traditional sit out guy, he'll have not even practiced in a team setting for over a year. Hunter is obviously a frosh and Foster has played 55 minutes in his career, both will have really unfair expectations based solely on potential and recruiting rankings.
The rest of the roster is pretty meh, I'd like to see a couple of the fr stick around, I think their size and athleticism gives them potential but the rest of the guys have bench/role player ceilings. You need a guy or two like that but we've seen this year, you can't start 3 guys like that and expect to be competitive. I'd like to see two of Conditt/Johnson/Harris stick around for depth but none are needle movers for the program going forward.
It's a huge IF but IF you landed 2 legit, big 12 caliber starting players through the portal to pair with this group of 8/9 guys, you could be competitive next year.
The biggest benefit to retaining around 8/9 guys is, the new coach wouldn't be in the scramble that Prohm found himself in trying to constantly turn over the roster. Even with the two great teams he inherited, Prohm was still trying to fill 4 or 5 spots every year, that lead to him reaching on recruits to try to keep up with the programs expectations, which lead to more guys leaving who weren't cut out of the big 12, which lead to more open schollies. Throw in a couple of guys leaving early for good reasons and it can go downhill fast.
I think there are coaches who can handle that but its not an easy task. Prohm struggled here for lots of reason but this was one of the biggest reasons. Turnover is commonplace with coaching changes these days but it'd be nice if we limit that cycle of roster turnover for the the next coach. It's really tough to maintain success when you are turning over 4/5 roster spots every year, the Fred blueprint is outdated, at ISU, we can't rely on a quick fix every year.
