Jantz named the starter

I don't think they are opposites. You simplify the process, put your guy in the best position he can be in, and live with the results. If a guy knows he has a short leash, confidence goes down and there is too much thinking about getting pulled for a mistake. So, I think a short leash complicates things.

To me, if I am the coach (and I am not, for the record), my guy is the guy unless something drastic necessitates a change. I'm not flip-flopping back and forth. At least not at the QB position.

Ahh, I got you now. That makes sense.

Barnett's best three games statistically came against the two worst B12 defenses (Tech and Kansas, even though tat wasn't impressive)), and against one of the conferences worst run defenses in OSU. We didn't have Lenz and Reynolds against KU so that surely didn't help him out though. We really struggled offensively against the better defensive teams he played.

I am definitely happy that Steele was named starter.

Ive got it from an inside source (no really, believe what you want) that SJ has looked and looks like a heisman in practice, last year obviously didnt translate enough in the actual games. JB is the consistent workhorse, SJ is the rough around the edges diamond. If you've listened to enough CPR quotes we need playmakers to compete in the Big12. It seems SJ has more of that playmaking potential than JB and thats probably why he was tab the starter. With that said, having JB ready to go at a moments notice has me downright giddy. Cant wait!

So, does that mean that JB looks really good also? If not, then why the delay in naming SJ as the starter?

Also, neither looked outstanding in the Spring game or the Gridiron scrimmage.

I was told this during the bowl game when Jantz came in. I was dumbfounded by the move but was told we gotta see if what happens in practice translates. Didnt happen of course. Why the delay? I cant be for sure. Probably a variety of things, but most of all the fact the JB is such a quality option. The guy has won games in the Big12. You have to give him the opportunity to fight for the starting job as long as you can. Plus, I think the competition only benefits the both of them.

Do I think either SJ or JB will be in legitamate heisman talk at any time during the season no, not at all. Do I think CPR beleives SJ has more big play potential and thus should be the starter? Well that's obvious. CPR has earned the right to make this decision without much second guessing, but the guys on the field will prove him right or wrong.

I hope for success, but I just have the jitters about this season. Jantz may be the best we got, but I will be the first to call for Barnett if Jantz doesn't pan out. I really don't blame his poor performance after the first 3 games last year on his injury, he just makes poor decisions.

JB makes equally poor decisions (and mistakes).
I am not sure the coaches have the expectation, or maybe intent, to play only one guy. We have two QB's of roughly equal quality, with slightly different styles. We also like to use the QB in the running game. Good chance it is expected we will see both.

And I've heard from an inside source that Jantz looks a little better than Barnett, while neither of them really looked great.

I've gotten that as well. In fact, I have heard Richardson has been more impressive but he is missing some intangibles at this point.

Both played great at times last year. both played terrible at times. I think Jantz has more upside, can do more with his feet. Makes for some EXCITING football. I hope the Tulsa game isn't as close as uni/iowa last year and we don't need late game heroics. Happy with this decision. not that it matters.

You know, we ***** all summer about the inane threads, and we start to get excited when football approaches, then we have 10 pages of armchair coaching over who is the better QB based on last year's action and a few clips on the internet and some (maybe) inside information. I'll take the expertise in a 'best thing I ever ate" thread over one of these threads any day.

Oh, well, off to bed, I'll be back tomorrow to read every god damned page that all of us jackasses post.

I'm thinking that having an experienced and healthy OL is going to help both quarterbacks. Congrats to Steele!

This. The performance of the o-line (and in consequence, the running game) will have a major impact. The less pressure put on the QB, the less bad decisions he makes. If the o-line plays really well, an average QB can look all-world. See: Banks, Brad.

I'm just not sold yet this year's o-line will be better than last. KO is a huge loss (no pun intended). Yes, they have all played before, so I am hopeful. But you just don't know until they all play together.

FIFY

I think what we all should be excited about is having 3 stud running backs and a QB the can run that crap out of the ball also.

Who was our last "Better than average" QB?

I would have to say the two that are still employed by NFL teams would have to be classified as better than average.

Wallace is in his 10th year in the league; Rosenfels, his 12th. Average college QB's rarely stick that long in the NFL, even holding clipboards.
