The current protests shine positive light on Iowa State and Iowa State Athletics.

Iowa State with it's first black football player in the 1920's. Then to name it's football stadium after that player. Way to go ISU!

The SEC didn't even have a black athlete until 1967.

Time to promote Iowa State, Iowa State Athletics and Jack Trice!

Also killed by white dudes in Minneapolis. Lots of speculation he was targeted in that game because of his skin color.
I don’t even know if you can call it speculation. From all accounts it seems pretty clear it was because of his skin color

I wish that we would make Jack Trice a much larger focus. I think that we have been doing a better job, but we could do even more.

Iowa State has the only FBS stadium in the country named for a Black man... 1 out of 130. And it was a community- and student-led grassroots campaign to rename Cyclone Stadium. Trice's "I Will" letter is a remarkable statement of resiliency in the face of racism.

"The honor of my race, family & self is at stake. Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will!"

To this day, I wish we could have "I Will" on the front of our helmets.... but of course we can't because Adidas owns it.... what a crock of s**t!

Under Armour had the "I Will" campaign.

Thanks for the correction.

So is it true that we could wear Nike uniforms and have "I Will" on the front of our helmets? If so, that's a no brainer IMO. Should have been done a LONG time ago.

We don't put enough emphasis on the Jack Trice story and message nearly enough IMO.

My Dad wrote a biography about Trice 20 years ago as I think he realized we really didn't know much about him. Shameless plug for him, but if you're interested here is a link. Please note its geared more for kids as but its a great read or good gift idea.

I’ve got a copy if this book. I also sent one down to Memphis as part of an ad hoc Jack Trice exhibit for the National Civil Rights Museum before our bowl game. I told them to keep it all until they use it for a permanent exhibit!

ISU has continued to miss opportunities to promote this

I still think it would be awesome to build another (larger) statue of him outside the stadium in that new plaza. I think the original one being on campus again is great, but having something outside the stadium (that’s named after him) to remember him by would be a great added feature to the stadium.

Naming a stadium for Trice is a great step but does not absolve Iowa State from doing even more for racial justice. Even naming the stadium took over a decade.

I agree they should do more to make the Jack Trice story more known. But it can be a fine line between promoting / educating, and exploiting the memory of a dead man. So they need to be smart and respectful about it. Thats a thing i would generally trust JP to get the right tone.

I’d say it’s more educating about who he was and what the story behind him is, more than anything. I’m sure a lot of outsiders think Jack Trice was some donor, former university president, or local war hero. Would be a nice touch to that new soon to be open area on the north side of the stadium to add something to tell the story.

Stadium opened in 1975. I think it was over 20 years until the stadium was named for Trice.
