Was listening to a podcast this morning and heard the story of a brawl between ISU and Mizzou in 1990 (?) that sounded insane. Apparently the brawl went on for 10-15 minutes, was started by an ISU coach, cheerleaders were getting punched, and an ISU player was "drawn and quartered" and kicked in the groin by a group of Mizzou players. Does anyone remember this or have video of it anywhere?

Paul Schulte (TE from '88-91) tells the story on this podcast. It is a must listen. Schulte is hilarious and tells some great stories from the dark days of ISU football.

I'm breaking my self-imposed suspension to comment on this.

It was a pretty big brawl. My recollection is a Mizzou player went out of bounds and then allegedly intentionally trucked an ISU assistant and **** got pretty crazy. The entire Mizzou team sprinted across to the ISU sideline. The player who got the worst of it was Matt Rouse, and I remember that because I knew him at the time. A few Mizzou players got him separated from everyone else, got him on the ground and were kicking him and stomping on him with their cleats. It was very maddening to see. There WAS a Cyclone Express of this game, I don't know if it's on CTV or not.

Yes! That’s how it is described in the podcast as well. Rouse seems to have gotten the worst of it. Would love to see that video. Can you imagine if that happened today?

Today, there definitely would have been ejections and suspensions, and Mel Foster probably would have been fired immediately. Keep in mind, it's been many years since I've seen the footage (I was at the game but on the opposite upper deck), but if memory serves, the Mizzou player headed directly at Foster on the sideline. Not sure if he actually trucked him or not. Foster was definitely ready to go, though, there was no hesitation.

ISU and Mizzou had an incident a few years prior in what I think was Criner's last year. Some forget, but Criner's last team was decent. In today's age, they would have gone bowling. Anyway, it was a very chippy game in Columbia. ISU called timeout with a few seconds left to kick a field goal, already leading 34-14. Mizzou fans booed like crazy and I think some bottles and stuff even got thrown on the field. There were some very tense moments after the game and Joe Henderson shielded Criner and ran him off the field.

In the podcast Schulte claims Foster was yelling at the Mizzou player the entire game and then those two got into it physically, which incited the brawl. Would love to see that video. Thanks for your memories on it. I had never heard of the incident before.

Did fans join in? I wouldn't be much help but I'd have a hard time watching one of players get jumped by several opposing players without doing anything. Just the punch to Monty got my blood boiling

I have seen the tape many times in the past, so I know it exists. My personal memory of it from the upper deck... From that far away it happened in slow motion. There was commotion on the ISU bench and the Mizzou team running across the field kind of looked like a swarm. Mizzou crashed into the ISU bench like a wave of water crashing into a wall and then it spread from right to left in my field of vision. I remember my dad and I standing up and looking at each other like HOLY ****!

I'm no tough guy, but after seeing the film and seeing what those cowards did ganging up on one lone player, I'd have had a hard time not jumping over the wall if I'd been right there. Of course I'd have to be wasted and joined by hundreds of others.

Recollection in this thread is accurate IMO. It happened like it was explained. Cold, dark day and a really chippy game where a sideline altercation escalated and EVERYONE on the Mizzou sideline ran to the SE corner of our sideline box and it was a dinger. Rouse was worked over, coaches and managers were scattered and the fans (there were not many, fewer than the box score said for sure) were throwing cups onto the field. The band played the Hamn's beer song as the fight was going on. It was crazy. There were 3 to 5 separate fights going on from the wall of the stands out onto the field of play.

I know this sounds dumb but there were so many of these in the 80's and 90's that they all start to run together now. KSU game ending brawl in 85, the Iowa bench clearing brawl in 1990 during the 1st half, the Mizzou brawl and there was one with Colorado in the early 90's as well (Jim Thompson was punching a CU dude while locked up). All of them had benches cleared and guys throwing haymakers.

Listening to this podcast taught me 2 things that I had never learned in 34 years of being a Cyclone fan-
1) The definition of the term "wedge buster"
2) Jim Walden's strategy was apparently to try to have the "best special teams in the country"

You'd have to be pretty hammered or high to do something like that. You'll realize that they are way bigger than you plus they have pads on. It wouldn't end well for the fans.

I am pretty sure I got big leagued by Suh when rushed we the field when we beat them. He is a very large man.

Well yeah I dont think anyone is contesting that but if you get a big group together and outnumber them well enough they're ******.

It sounds like Jim Walden’s teams knew how to play special teams and knew how to get into a brawl. It is amazing that no one got ejected or suspended and this reputation didn’t stick with any of those teams.

I remember this fight. I also remember Everyone almost fight Rick Neuheisal when Colorado ran the score up on us.

His teams were also proficient running the triple option.

Option 1 - Hand ball to running back for 1 yard gain.
Option 2- QB keeps for -1 yard gain.
Option 3 - Fumble on the exchange.

I don't know if Walden would have been any better of a coach if he had similar talent to the teams that he faced, but he never really had much of a a chance to succeed. Between the poor facilities, lack of university support and reduced scholarships due to Criner's misdeeds, he was always fighting an uphill battle (and he made sure to remind everyone of that).
