ISU vs Baylor Post Game Thread

Game thoughts:
- I thought the team played with good intensity on defense. There were some break downs, but overall I thought they played fairly well.
-They did an excellent job on the boards. This may have been one of their better performances this year.
-DG was the only option that allowed us to get into our offense against the pressure defense of their guards. He needs some refinement, but I was impressed that he was able to assert himself on the road in a conference game.
-CB was fun to watch.
-Why didn't Mac call some timeouts?
I was surprised Mac didn't call timeout during a couple of critical stretches in the second half. The crowd got revved up during those runs and it appeared to rattle our team. Timeout may have been able to settle our guys down and short circuit those runs. There's no need to save timeouts for the end if you give up runs that keep you from being in the game down the stretch.
- I'm also surprised that Jiri wasn't back in the game by the five minute mark. Normally coaches will have their best players on the floor for the closing stretch.

You're probably right, i'm a little frustrated with the PG play today. Diante is certainly a talented ball handler. And he's young. He penetrated well, today, but i didn't think he took care of the ball well.
I'm still not certain he's the PG of the future, but he'll be a nice combo guard type, someone who can team up with another guard to handle bringing the ball up court when defensive pressure is applied. I still think we need another ball handler though, from a recruiting standpoint.

Missouri is one of the teams I fear the most in the Big 12. The way they press so much, we probably match up the worst with them out of anyone else in the conference other than Kansas.
Unfortunately I was only able to see the second half, wish it would have been the other way around. Just plain sloppy is the only way to describe what I saw. Little or no patience, ball handling was atrocious. A couple of those possessions I swore I saw Wayne Morgan on the sidelines…
We need Diante to step up and be this player. This is the problem right now - some of our most skilled players (Brackins and Garrett) are very young and they make mistakes that just drive you crazy. I love BP and we need to keep playing him until the turnovers thing can get cleaned up by Diante. The guys turnovers probably lead to at least 10 easy points for BU. 11 turnovers between Garrett and Brackins. Unfortunately usually the only thing that really gets guys better at that is more experience and chemistry with players on the floor. And those things take time to develop and we're all impatient.
Terrible. Diante (who supposedly is the future) had six turnovers to go with his "career high" seven assists. Peterson played 22 minutes...took two shots and had four rebounds. Oh yeah and three fouls. Then there is Haluska -welcome back! Ten minutes and no steals, no blocks...nothing! The guards played terrible and McDermott let them. He got outcoached and doesn't know what to do against a balanced attack. If this is any precursor to his ability to coach it is not looking good for us in the Big 12.
Very well-stated. There is a still a "best of the worst" and certainly Haluska is not even at that level. While coaching cannot bring back his "touch" as it were on his shot, it certainly can be used to make sub-par players play defense. What is the motivation? You get in...you suck...you get to play more! Here is a novel idea: since we have NO talent anyway (for the sake of argument) how about we stick in players who play DEFENSE? If Haluska is not going to score fine! But, how can you not score and not be able to play defense. Or, how about the fact that Diantee is averaging 2.3 turnovers per game. Can't do anything about that huh? How about we have a guard who when he scores seven and hands out seven (and we won't even talk about the seven he handed out) they don't turn the ball over six times. It is easy to get outcoached when you are not a very good coach. He is not Phil Jackson and he certainly doesn't have Mike, Scottie or even now Kobe (as Phil has/does) so CALL A FREAKING TIMEOUT to stop the bleeding every once in a while.
So yep...touche...McDermott has no talent. But, you couple no real offensive talent with NO DEFENSE and you have a recipe for disaster.

Diante can get to the hole but he cannot finish. He can dribble and he is marginally decent on defense (yes -he gets some steals but is not a good defender overall). So what exactly is his talent? Also, explain the whole we have skilled players (per this post) and no talen (see post below)? Not sure I understand that. Is it that we have NO talent but of that lack of talent we have "talented tenth" of the Cyclones? Succintly stated: WHAT is Diante's talent?
I understand he is young and we cannot expect the world of him. Fine. But, I do not understand in what area he is talented (now).
How does a player get better? Is it playing against his teammates everyday...no. Its by playing a powerful opponent. Diante is a freshman. The more he plays against aggressive talent the more he will develop an answer to it. If he doesnt, then you can say he sucks. I see this for all of our freshman. As the supporting cast gets better, this team will be tough.
I was at the game yesterday. If we let the Baylor crowd rattle us, we are in trouble. They were dead the first half, the place was only 2/3 full, their "Sic 'em" bear claw thing was beyond dumb, their student section has barely more than 100 people in it (including the pep band). They only got excited during the 20-2 run in the second half. Their crowd was nothing special.
But, this was my first opportunity to see Brackins play. Damn, what a stud, but he still made a lot of freshman mistakes. We made so many bad plays during that stretch, I am shocked McDermott allowed it to continue.

class isn't in session yet. not that our fan support is anything to brag about, but that's the worst the students will be.
I wasn't as bummed about the game yesterday as it seems a lot of people are in this thread. They surprised me was anyone else surprised about them being up at halftime I know I was remember this teams only loses were to Arkansas and #4 Washington State they have plenty of experience an excellent coach (who may be moving up at the end of the year). Craig played great, Wes played good, and Rashon kept us from getting beat by 20. Baylor is a 3 point team and they only made 8 of 18, Craig made as much as they did, that is great defense which is what is needed to win big 12 games. We turned it over too much and didn't utilize the big men as much. But i wont be hanging my head it wasn't a win but a good step forward.
I also think that people are taking this loss much too hard. I think everyone sees the Baylor name and automatically thinks it should be a win. The fact is that we played a good team and also pulled out a win. They are picked to be a tournament team by several people, including joe lunardi with bracketology. I'm kind of encouraged by the fact that we stuck with this team even when falling behind by over 10 points.
