ISU LBs and DBs...

We packed it in against UNI to force them to throw the ball. We won't do the same to Iowa, they will easily exploit it with a throwing QB. I look for us to stem it down to a 4 man front more this game. Going to have to play aggressive on the edges if we want to beat Iowa.

No...playing a 3..4 is not packing it in. That's the opposite of packing it in. ISU will do what most clueless big ten coaches cant figure out. Strangle the tight end and play run. Done deal.

Commit to stopping the run and make their quarterback beat you with his arm. The Illinois state defense was poorly coached to start their game spreading linebacker's outside.

Illinois state stopped doing that and all of a sudden Iowa started to struggle. Beathard started to struggle.

ISU will make Beathard beat them. I will be shocked if Iowa can run the ball well.

The biggest thing I took from the defensive performance and something Wally mentioned was that they played together great as a unit...everyone rallying to the ball and they were sure tacklers.

I was pleased with our LB, Harris brings some much needed heavy hitting between the tackles while being able to flow off tackle as well, Jones will be tested this week if we do indeed see more 4-3 than 3-4 engaging more OL. Peters played well even with a few missed tackles, stouter against the run than knott ever has been. I like the future with Harvey and Seobuc

Secondary was fantastic, as has been mentioned Peavy and Wiltz are very good and can close very quickly and are willing hitters! I believe we have a future 1st Big 12 S in KCM , very gifted.

I think we match up well against Iowa, their WR are average at best so I look for same lock down coverage against them as we flourished in against UNI and KCM or Qujuan being able to walk down and cover the TE or RB out of the backfield. My question is if we will see more of Seeley along with Harris at the expense of the Will or Sam against Iowas running style...

I liked what I saw from the Lb. I like Kane Seeley, but he was atrocious last year. Vs uni he seemed improved and I noticed him getting his nose in there a lot more. Harris and Peters were both good.

UNI's early success, in the 1st and 2nd quarter, was largely due to over-pursuit by the LBs. To their credit, UNI ran a number of misdirection based plays. Our defense was so fired up that they bit nearly every time. By the later part of the second quarter, guys were figuring out how to be fast and still maintain their assignment. Why it seemed to take so long (to figure that out) was due to all the LB substitutions. It seemed that each LB needed to figure that out for themselves. By the second, the defense apparently figured it out that they can cover their assignment and play fast (without over-pursuing).

Also, I love the idea of rotating corners with no drop-off of talent or speed.

Looking forward to watching this defense next Saturday. Go Cyclones.........

It seems like our LBs have been succeptable to over running plays for the last 3 years. Against running QBs like Waters on designed QB runs the play would get stopped at the point of attack, then the QB would cut it back and our LBs were caught up in the trash and couldn't make a play.

I really think Tucker is the type of player that will make everyone else better. Having a pile mover like that makes all the difference in the world. If you can get pressure with your front 3 or 4 your defense will be good. If you can't, then you need outstanding play from your LBs and DBS. I am trying not to get too excited yet, but Tucker, Pierson, Thomas and the rest of the DL rotation look legit.

Did Luke Knott play? I didn't notice him out there and I did notice Sam Seanbacher out there quite a bit and I think he was behind Luke on the depth chart.

Just going back and rewatching game and man Wiltz and Peevy can fly to ball..they close quick and hit. The fact we have 4 capable DBs is huge vs spread teams. This week we likely see more of SR as he is stout vs run

KCM looked like a man out there. It sure seemed like UNI schemed to take him out of the plays after the first drive.

I don't know if I agree that our LB's will get exposed by Iowa and other teams. Yes they may get beat by superior players going into the BIG12 but I saw LB's that had a nose for the ball and enjoyed hitting, not just arm wrapping, but head into the grill go through you tackles. The UNI offense may have been only mediocre, but our Defensive line and our LB's wore them out by the end of the third quarter. I could see WR's, QB's, and even the RB's for UNI getting to the ground instead of driving forward because they were sick of being hit by these guys.

I think our LB's, now that it appears our D-line has improved are going to be more ball hawkish than the past years. Which means more turnovers and TFL's

This. After Bailey made that scramble to get the first down during the first series, on the next 3rd and long KCM was playing 2 deep zone and he read qb draw and must have run 20 yds up and to the right pre-snap, exactly where Bailey ran the play. KCM threw him down with that jersey tackle else he would have converted again. Kid is smart, fast, and tenacious.....and one game into his soph yr. Top shelf.

That guy plays like he's an AA. So much confidence.

I hardly noticed Tribune playing.. seemed like UNI was hesitant to throw his direction. Loved seeing Peavy and Wiltz fly to the ball and deliver some big hits. UNI QB might have helped a bit, he was bad.

Jones and Northrup both looked solid. Harris is the real deal. Wiltz and Peavy were better than I expected.

In general I loved the aggressiveness. You don't get 6 sacks and 13 TFL without being aggressive. Tucker and Pierson dominating up front helped our LB's and secondary play more freely.

I think one thing this group needs to improve upon, based on the uni game is the closing of open space when the QB begins to scramble. In the first half, when the uni QB began to run, he had a lot of field he was able to cover before our guys were able to get to him. It is good that the dline was able to force this, but the next step is getting the secondary to limit those yards.

Also, I thought we need to do better on covering screen plays.

Otherwise, a great job by the defense!

CPR said in an interview that they weren't really prepared for a QB to run quite that much and it caught them off guard to start until they made some halftime adjustments. Bailey made most of his running yards in the first half, if you noticed.

Agree. I just watched a replay of the game. The first play right after the "pylon incident," our D-line pushed UNI back like they were a bunch of toddlers. And that was with only 3 down linemen.

I like that people are praising our defense, but it's only one game and against an offense that doesn't look like it will be that great this year. The defense did play great against UNI, but I want to see it consistently throughout the year. I think we have the speed to play well against Iowa, it's just a matter of making proper adjustments when needed because we know Iowa will try to run up the gut all game long and mix in some passes.

I'm still scared to see how the D plays against Baylor and TCU. But the D does have potential to keep us in games. I would love to see pressure on opposing QBs all season long, and I want to see CPR get back to being one of the nation's top teams in forced turnovers.
