Just thought id get others thoughts on our new Lbs and DB play. I thought Harris played well for his first game..dude can hit. What I noticed is that overall this group of Lbs are far more athletic and faster than we've seen in past couple years. J jones is going to make a lot of plays this year. What impressed me more than anything I think was the play of Peevy and Wiltz our 2 reserve corners who may not be reserves for long. Wiltz and Peevy are both faster and close faster. Having 4 DBs without much drop off will help keep guys fresh a lot. I realize UNI offense was basically one dimensional but this is a far more athletic and faster defense that we've had in years.

Agree. They played very well. Now I know why Ken Lynn was moved to WR. Probably down the depth chart a ways at CB.

I think one thing this group needs to improve upon, based on the uni game is the closing of open space when the QB begins to scramble. In the first half, when the uni QB began to run, he had a lot of field he was able to cover before our guys were able to get to him. It is good that the dline was able to force this, but the next step is getting the secondary to limit those yards.

Also, I thought we need to do better on covering screen plays.

Otherwise, a great job by the defense!

We did better in 2nd half. Believe that Gray and Stansbury pointed out in Podcast that the UNI QB was able to elude the LB a few times and the middle of the field was wide open for those big runs. Big reason why UNI went with Aaron Bailey at QB. We played better at contain in 2nd half. Have to like the adjustments made at halftime. We dominated the 3rd quarter.

Counted at least three CB Brian Peavey pass-break-ups (passes-broken-up? . . .).

LB's are going to get exposed in pass coverage if they don't improve. Harris & Peters were not in good position most of the time. Look for Iowa to isolate Canzeri out of the backfield against them.

The coaches have really liked Sam Richardson (4) the past three seasons, and it looks like he is going to lose a lot of time to a freshman and Juco during his senior season. Those guys could be studs for us.

Positioning by LBs was very average, like last year against NDSU. Moving Miller helped last year until he got hurt. Most teams will be able to exploit our LBs with the TE and RB out of the backfield.

Gosh. Why didn't UNI do that?

#34 Tribune had another nice one in which he wrapped his arm around, knocked the ball away, without an interferance penalty.

Because they are not very good, particularly while installing a new offense and with a new QB that can't pass. Oh, and they didn't have the game film other teams will have of UNI's rbs being open.

And we have the same game film and will adjust. My god your a miserable cyclone fan, last time I checked we won the game in convincing fashion.

We packed it in against UNI to force them to throw the ball. We won't do the same to Iowa, they will easily exploit it with a throwing QB. I look for us to stem it down to a 4 man front more this game. Going to have to play aggressive on the edges if we want to beat Iowa.

Not really the same, but sure. Wally also has a history of coaching them up, but there is no quick move like last year. It will take time, and until then teams will exploit it, likely starting this week.

We are use to two or three guys making the tackles in past years. This group had six or seven tacklers. Very few missed tackling opportunities.

The talent of our defense is twice what it was last year.

I like the attitude as well. they weren't backing down from anyone. I get it is UNI but we have be scared ******** on D the last couple of years.

All I need to see is one of our DBs 'Drew Tate' CJ BreathingHard and I will dive head first into the Kool Aid.

Covering the RB and TE is not always easy. I agree Iowa likes to throw to those positions a lot and in the past we have given them the under neath stuff all day...will prob be same this week. I think what u had was essentially 3 Lbs playing in their first big game. They will practice against those screens and TE coverage all week trust me. ISU will play straight up man on Iowa WRs all game.
