ISU #2 Pre-Season

If we want to be an elite program we have to start handling the publicity and learn how to play with the target on our back. It is definitely a different mindset.
Thank you! It gets tiring on here having everyone say that they like it more when we are under appreciated. If ISU is very highly respected before every season it will also help us a ton in the recruiting market. If we can't win when we are the 800 pound gorilla then we are chokers. I say bring on the hype and high ranking and let's see how well our boys react to it.

Yup, can't take the next step if we are always flying under the radar.

Oh geeze; this is unprecedented. I agree about the publicity, but I felt more comfortable when the B12 writers predicted us 8th and 5th in the previous two B12 polls.

The Big 12 writers (and coaches) may still vote us 5th in the preseason polls!

It's definitely a paradigm shift to be expected to do well. I've only been a Cyclone fan for 31 years, I barely know how to handle this! :jimlad:

Great. The Hawktards at HN have an ongoing thread complaining about our pre-season #4 ranking. This #2 ranking will make their heads explode.

Publicity is fun, but it's kinda hilarious to look at that UAB loss and follow it up with "#2 in the country!"

Kentucky lost to Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT in 2013 and were preseason #1 in the fall 2013 AP Preseason Poll.

That 2013 recruiting class tho

I agree with anywhere from #6 to God forbid #9 preseason.

If we are #9 you can bet we'll be a #2 or #1 seed and get upset in the NCAA first round next year.

Until the draft-declaration/transfer/one and done dust settles, rankings will fluctuate. I expect ISU to wind up in top 10 preseason, but possibly not top 5 - at least a few higher profile programs will push us downward a little. Human nature.

But it's likely this will be the highest preseason expectation since, when was it, 1996-97?

It's a fun and unfamiliar situation. We need to prepare for another aspect -- higher ranking has the risk of dropping a few spots more often than rising a few spots. Get ready for the pre-big time.

I don't care who UNC brings back, they're just not a #1 team in my mind. Don't know who it should be, but it shouldn't be them.
