Is this our first “random guy shooting 25% from 3pt but goes off” in our favor?

I’m not an old head but recall the end of Orr era. I’m trying to remember a time ISU has done to an opponent what seems to so often happen *against* them.

I can recall multiple banked threes from the same player and countless games where we get burnt by the “help off this guy” who shoots ~20% but has a banner day against us.

Maybe something Naders first few games when he started finding his stroke? I honestly can’t think of one though over the last 30+ yrs.

What’s your best, random ISU guy goes off in an uncharacteristic manner you recall?

John Neal didn't even check into the CyHawk game until 6 minutes remaining and went off.

You know, they made a big deal about his 3-point shooting percentage, but he had only tried 16 threes on the year prior to this game. Can you really determine how well a guy shoots 3s on a sample size of 16? In 19 games up until that one?

Before the Grambling State game, he made 12 3s in a row from the right baseline. Tre King has a nice stroke on FTs too.

Also, I believe I heard the announcer say on TV that the Cyclones were only shooting 26% from 3 in conference play. So as a team we really went off today.

I think the whole “some nobody goes off from 3 against ISU!” narrative is fake. Or at the very least it doesn’t happen to us substantially more than any other team. It’s called basketball. If you’re game-planning to take something away, then you’re going to leave something else open.

I’m with you that it doesn’t happen more than others. I just don’t feel like we very often return that favor.

TK shot 34% on 2.0 attempts per game his last season at Western Kentucky. Those aren't Splash Brothers numbers or anything but they are "you can't leave this guy wide open" numbers.
I get the strategy though. Teams always pick their poison. If you think it helps keep our guards out of the lane and Milan in check, then you put Dickinson on Tre (thinking he would stay near the paint and allow Dickinson to stay there too) and take your chances when Tre swings to the perimeter. Tre made them pay, and that, along with having another guy who can drop 20 on you, gives teams another thing to think about when defending us.

Sure, you can't take everything away from everyone. Self mentioned in his post-game that they did this deliberately, put Dickinson on him knowing he'll be giving up open jump shots to a guy who lately hasn't been hitting that shot.

If TK can consistently hit that shot then that's really big for our offense!

Conversely, Dickinson was a real liability at the very end. He wanted the ball, but he didn't know what the play was. He made some nice shots early, but that last one was horrible.

Someone mentioned it in another thread and I agree. Dickinson puts up a nice stat line and will probably be in the NPOTY conversation, but he's a weird fit for KU's typical style of play.

Like a trailer hitch on a corvette. He's really good, but his presence changes the way that they have to play for sure.

How did Dickenson bully everyone around him on both ends, yet end up with 1 foul? I love that this game will be remembered for Tre King's contributions, not Dickenson's.

He had an arm bar or extended hand on nearly every play I saw from him on D

That was my only officiating gripe in a game I thought (by big 12 standards) was officiated well. Travels, illegal bs, fouls, antics...they just gonna let hin do whatever he wants?
