"For years Nebraska stood out amongst the non-Big 10 midwest programs for having a coach with strategies for being unique on the field and culturally strong such as to allow the creation of a powerhouse team in rural flyover country without being parked next to major talent. Then Tom Osborne moved on and Kansas State held that distinction under Bill Snyder’s direction. Now we are presumably approaching the end of the Bill Snyder era, could Matt Campbell and Iowa State be next?"

That’s the plan.

NU has fallen back closer to their innate position (although it’s not as bad as it could soon be). Snyder and KF are retiring soon. Minnesota will always lean to pro sports. There’s a big opportunity right now.

Loved that article - great analysis.

I'm most interested in how much we stick to the 3-DL look this weekend, or if we revert to the 4-DL "base" we started with. In his preview this week Heacock mentioned that we are finally getting healthy enough on both the DL (Tongo and Johnson I presume) and at DB to play their base "Dime" defense. But that means taking one or two of the LBs off the field, which is tough given how well they've been playing. But with TCU's ability to run, it would make sense to go back to the 4-DL look.

I've wanted (emotionally) to revert to 4 DL in every game since we switched, but the results don't merit the change. So long as our 3 DL are occupying their offensive lineman and keeping them from getting to the second level, I don't think we'll change. As I said in another thread, since TCU's passing game isn't as big of a threat, we may see more run support from the safeties out of the set, but at the least, will probably see the safeties leaning forward a bit more on the snap.

I agree, stick with what has worked to this point. I didn't like the 3 man front at first either, but it has worked so far. Let them run it for 3-4 yards a carry. The longer the drive and added number of plays are more chances for the other team to make a mistake. Even the most well coached teams will eventually crack. If our offense is clicking with this defensive strategy, we can beat anyone.

I've always felt that this years ISU FB team had the discipline of your typical, well coached, K-State squad, and this article confirms as much. Which is smart, since we don't have the recruiting advantages other schools do.

There's no doubt that Campbell gets Iowa State and it's advantages and disadvantages, and we're now seeing his vision come to fruition on the field.

It's really ******* amazing and I'm loving the success and looking forward to Saturday afternoons again. Thank you football Jesus for delivering our messiah.
