Iphone users..

Yes, cause Windows is asking me to do it at least once a week and it gets fricking old.

Especially since I can't restart my desktop without having to go thru a 20 min process to get my 22" monitor to work at the top resolution again. Nevermind the near 5 min reboot time it takes.

I don't know what OS you're running, but my Windows updates maybe once a month at minimum.

Now, if it's product updates (such as for me hp system updates, Adobe updates, Apple software updates, etc - the ones that I see all the time) that are what is pissing you off, you can hardly blame Microsoft for that...

Those are updates to the operating system. Apple never said it wouldn't constantly update it's software. Deal with it.

They are security updates to the operating system, that often fix critical vulnerabilities. There is sometimes new functionality added, but they also are there to fix major security flaws.

Apple just rolls up hundreds of megabytes of updates all at once and leaves systems vulnerable longer instead of updating more often like MS does.

If Apple had to deal with the sheer number of exploit attempts and the market share that MS does, it would be patently irresponsible for them to wait as long as they do to issue major security updates.

Apple is a great marketing machine, but their products simply aren't all that innovative or new, or really all that much "better". They are just well refined and manufactured. That's always been the case with Apple, though.

Yeah technically you can, but not when you're in the airport just because your battery ran out..it's a lot more complex than any other phone.

Yes, you can carry a external battery pack for the iphone. They make em now. It'd be just as equally annoying to carry as an extra battery.

Apps might be better, but PalmOS is almost a 20 year old platform. My point was that everything the iPhone does has been done before, and then some. It may look a bit nicer and prettier, but it doesn't actually have much functionality that wasn't available 5 years ago.

No, I could not find one current phone that allowed me to use a wifi connection. They show their age too...phone seemed to attached to being a pda. I was also annoyed with the lack of customization a user can do on either.

Replacable battery as in I can carry a spare or two charged up and don't have to worry about using my phone all day. This is kind of important when you're using bluetooth tethering all day, as 3G is rough on batteries (of course, this is less of a problem with AT&T since you'll end up on EDGE a lot if you stray from the beaten path too much).

Multi-touch screen is not a keyboard. The lack of physical keyboard is the biggest single thing that keeps me from getting an iPhone.

Why? A physical keyboard just takes up space and makes the phone bulky. Really, why do ppl want a physical keyboard?? No offense, just don't know what the appeal of a physical keyboard is.

Palm, and sprint, have had this for a long time. Again, not as slick as Apple, perhaps, but it's there. It turns out that most of them are mostly crappy and useless, though.

True, but Apple came in and blew them away in a short period of time. Makes you wonder about what Palm/Spring were doing wrong.

Webkit is great, I agree. And that's why it's the basis for the Palm Pre's web browser.

Palm has this. It may be a bit outdated, but it's clean and standardized.

Multitouch is great, but palm has had "single touch" forever, and it works just fine.

Palm had a stupid little stylus you had to use.

Google maps is integrated into PalmOS. Not to mention the availability of third party applications ala TomTom. Perhaps not as tightly as it is in the iPhone, but it's there, and it works just fine. It had it before the iPhone did, as well.

This goes against the calendar logic you just used? It's there but not tight? Both camps have some current drawbacks.

It's beating them because it's a slick, functional device that has a mammoth marketing department behind it, and it's marketed at consumers first, and professionals second. The traditional "professional" smartphone market is still dominated by blackberries, winmo phones and palms. The iPhone is killing in the "consumer" smartphone market.

My point is that there are VERY few things you can do on your iPhone does that I can't do with my palm, and some areas where my palm even has an edge.

Exactly....Apple has only been at it a few years and is already on par with them. That's not just luck or good marketing.

Fwiw...I'm glad we have so many choices and different companies competing and keeping us arguing about the virtues of each. Keeps them moving/pushing to make better gadgets.

Nope, it was about once a week Window's update. So for now I've said screw it and haven't rebooted.

What makes it a pain is Windows won't hold my display driver so I have to reinstall that after every reboot.

I swear I noticed more holes between Grimes and Panora last summer and this summer they seem to be non existent. Constant coverage the whole way.

I'm just waiting for someone to take the initiative and massively exploit one of these security vulnerabilities via hacking or a debilitating computer virus so that Apple can face a massive class-action lawsuit for deceptive advertising - uh, no, it's not because Apples cannot be hacked nor do they never get computer viruses, it's because they hold such a minor market share that it's not worth going after them.

Great, so now that slick little package becomes a bigger package with a thing hanging off the back of it, not to mention the wear and tear on the connectors.

The Treo Pro lets you do wifi. But there really isn't that much of a point, since Sprint and Verizon's 3G networks are much more mature and widespread than AT&T. It's one of those features that might be handy in theory, but in reality is sort of pointless, IMO.

A physical keyboard lets me type without looking. I'm not alone in that opinion.

They weren't marketing it, and it wasn't very polished.

I almost never pull out the stylus. I've been using my fingers on my touchscreen for as long as I've had palms.

Apple has been at it for 20+ years, and it's STILL not as good as PalmOS for PDA use. And it still doesn't do anything my palm with a 15 year old crappy operating system can't do.

How about multitasking? Can't do that on the iPhone (at least not yet...maybe a little bit in 3.0). I'm sorry that I don't see the iPhone as the revolution that everyone else does, but it simply isn't.

If you need to multitask it just means you're too slow at completing a task.

My touchscreen seemed pointless on the Treo 700. Especially when it came to any type of fine point selection.

To each their own on the keyboard. Since it's literally about an inch of seperation I have hard not seeing both...even if I tried to only see one.

I like the fact (and hated the palm for it) that when at home I can use my fast wifi and not be throttled by a 3G connection.

Well it would be nice if, say, my golf score program that has GPS yardages and whatnot kept running in the background while I pulled up a website with a flash media player, and then swapped back to it while I was playing, for instance.

Or it would be nice if I swapped to audio only slingplayer and could do other stuff in the foreground. It's one of those things that you get used to once you have it. There's no reason the iPhone couldn't do those things, but Apple doesn't want it to. Why? Because it will kill the non-replacable battery so quickly it will harm the user experience. Thank you, Apple, for looking out for us consumers.

I use the touchscreen a lot on my 755, and I pull the stylus out maybe MAYBE once a day.

The 3G connection on my phone is every bit as fast as 512k DSL, which is far more than adequate for a device with the processing power of any phone.

AT&T's 3G network might stink, necessitating wifi, but EVDO Rev A is fast enough (and coverage is wide enough) to pretty much eliminate the usefulness of wifi most of the time. The only time it's a bit useful is for accessing local network resources, which is handy, but for general web surving, 3G is more than adequate.

What the heck you doing with your phone out (let alone with you and on) while on a golf course?

I love these threads!

If people despise the iPhone or Palm devices so much, why spend hours debating and trashing them?

Because it's geeks like us that keep things evolving.

That and I feel each phone has it's pluses.

I use it to keep score, and track my shots. It also gives distance to the pin and to hazards via GPS.

I can just picture you.... 35+ in age, had a Palm 1000 when they first came out, and haven't switched since.

Palm likes to use the fact that they did it "first" or "we've been doing that for 20 years" and the people that buy them just eat it up because that's all they have been told. If Palm is so great, how come they haven't come up with an innovative phone or OS for a phone is the past 10 years? Apple absolutely dominating the market right now because they're not thinking about the bottom line when it comes to a product, they are thinking about the consumer and utilizing advanced technology.

Palm as a company is getting upset because they have been able to make money in the smartphone market for years with a mediocre product, and now somebody is making them work at it and spend some money making a decent product.

AT&T=Verizon>Sprint -- Sprint is a joke. May be fast in the metro, but drive outside of town and see what happens.

Wifi is great on a phone because then you don't have to rely on a phone networks data, rather you can connect to a personal wifi network and utilize your high speed broadband. Also you can use some apps with your personal wifi that allow you to control media PC's, manage servers, screenshot with VNC and other varies things that you couldn't do if you weren't on wifi. It makes perfect sense.

Palm Pre = G1 Android Phone in 2008
Had a lot hype, but fizzed out and didn't amount to much because it was missing the large scale community (eg App Store for iPhone)

I'm 31, just FYI, not that it matters.

No, I've tried them all, and Palm is still the best at being a PDA. It is also a reasonable phone. It might not be the best at everything, but it's reasonable at everything.

I had Verizon for 5 years, and I've had Sprint for 3. I see no noticable difference between the two, and I travel ALL the time, and not just in the metro. Try driving outside of the metro (or even inside the metro if you live in that little backwater of Ankeny) with AT&T and see how your 3G connection works.

EVDO Rev A is as fast or faster than many home DSL connections. My mom uses it for internet exclusively, and it's just as fast, in practice, as my 20mbit cable at home so long as you aren't downloading huge files.

I have a remote control to control my media pcs and don't really care to use a phone to do it all (even though I can with my palm :D). It's a trivial use case.

Since we are debating smart phones and pricing, has anyone got Boost Mobile's $50 unlimited plan? Although ugly, I noticed they have a qwerty keyboard phone (motorola i465) available.

Clearly you've repeatedly expressed your Apple disdain on here, but the fact is most of those apps remember where you are when you go back into them and it's a rather quick transition between.

I think you're making something to be an issue that typically is not.
