iPad Screen Cracked - Repair Question

My young son dropped my iPad and the corner of the screen is cracked (shattered in that corner). The main part of the screen is untouched and the iPad works as it is supposed to work.

I would like to get it fixed. I live in the Cedar Rapids area. I have talked to a business in Iowa City that said they charge $229 to replace the glass. A business in Cedar Rapids/Marion said they charge $329 and send it to Apple who transfers all the info/apps to a new iPad and send me a new one.

Online I see repair kits near $100. Has anyone here replaced the glass on an iPad? How difficult is it? I did some reading on the web and there are stories ranging from "it is easy" to "I destroyed my iPad while replacing the glass".

Any recommendations? Thanks!
 
Wife dropped mine... I wasn't upset, but wanted it done right. I researched doing it myself... and for the extra $100 or so.... I wanted someone else to do it.

IIRC, there are a couple of kits out there with different parts for different problems (one you pop off the screen you know all that isn't working). So how far do you go in getting the correct kit.

Nothing of real value in my response... but simply pay the extra to get it fixed by someone else.

I kind of feel this way...not thrilled about paying $100 or so more than I might by doing it myself...but at the same time if I pay the extra then I don't have the stress of doing it myself and not getting it done right! If it was simple I would do it...but not sure it would be.

I hear ya. Its a job I would like to watch and learn so I feel confident when trying it myself for the next time.

Agree. Kicking myself for not having a better case on the iPad to begin with! Pure accident and if anyone is to blame it is me for letting a 2+ year old use and and carry it around with a cheap case! All on me!

Oh dear. Yes it is on you. Get a otterbox or whatever they are called... you won't have to worry about your 2 y/o with your iPad again.

Dropped mine a few months ago and found a repair kit on ebay for $35. There are YouTube videos showing how to do it, and if you are ok tech wise, it is not that bad.

watch a couple of the videos on it and see if you feel competent to try it.

Funny in a way (not in the way that I have to pay to get it fixed)...I ordered one YESTERDAY! Honestly! Get to work this morning and the wife calls to tell me about the situation! Unbelievable!

Question: can you tell that the glass has been replaced on your iPad? Just curious.

I rock this guy out on my ipad 1... Works great so far (about a year with two year old twins...) They carry it around by the arms which helps as they have a good grip on it. I have a across the bottom of my screen, probably reaching 20% of the way into the screen from the bottom. I had a screen protector on it and that's held it together fine. I actually have no problem with it at all. it doesn't even seem to bother people when they view the screen. I haven't fixed it because it doesn't seem to be a problem. I could get it fixed easy enough. am I in danger of permanently damaging it if I drop it again without getting it fixed? if I'm not I figure I'll just use it this way until it stops working and then get it fixed. But if I might kill it completely I'd fix it already.
 
I've replaced touch screens on Ipad 2's a couple times. I've built and fixed desktops and laptops and I found it difficult, although simple, to do. Very easy to break some more parts. For the life of me I can't get the replacement screen to adhere to the ipad perfectly, and that bugs the hell out of me.

$130 for someone who others can vouch for is a great deal IMO.


FWIW If you have an Ipad 1 I've heard the screens are very easy to replace. Their screens are attached by metal clips instead of glue or 2 sided tape, which is the big hurdle with the newer ipads.
