Iowa's Hidden Gems - Iowa Vacations

I'll echo the overwhelming sentiment that NE Iowa is the place to go. Decorah is nice, but don't stay in one place the whole time. If you like camping, I definitely agree with Yellow River Forest, though they had some flooding this year, and I'm not sure how well they recovered.

The entire NE corner has the best trout fishing in the state, with streams everywhere. Head to some river towns like McGregor for Old Man River, Lansing to take a trip on the Mississippi River Explorer (stop in the Safehouse Saloon for a pizza and beer), or Marquette if you want to do a little gambling. If you aren't into camping, find a bed & breakfast or rental cabin somewhere. They are everywhere and many of them are nice.

This
is a good place to go for a general idea of river town entertainment (some B&B's on there too). I just looked it over quick; I noticed some things were out of date, so just check out the places online to make sure they still exist.

my mom has been kayaking at yellow river and said it was fine. i agree with the moving around part. every little town seems to have something. Cargill, which is one of the largest privately held companies in North America, was started in Conover (no longer, just a few buildings), right off of 52 between Decorah and Calmar.

i also like the turkey river around the Clermont area (home of Montauk, former governers mansion). nice tubing and canoeing.

and Nordic fest is this weekend, and this is the weekend my family always gets together. kids love the parade, elvelopet and rock throw. we have guests coming from Des Moines with us and my sister is bringing a group from Marion. This will be the first time my parents have run out of beds, so we are making our own camp ground on the farm.

There is a travel column in the NY Times titled the Frugal Traveler, the writer will be coming to Iowa in a tour of the middle of the country. I sent the writer some suggestions and he actually wrote back to me. /csb

I'm guilty as anyone on "being in a hurry," but something like taking back highways vs I35 or other highways can really bring you to some cool town/sites.

Just got back from my previously mentioned trip to Lanesboro/Whalan, MN. The pie was still fantastic. They just repaved that stretch of the trail, so it's very nice. Also stopped at the Peddle Pushers Café in Lanesboro this time. Fantastic MN local beers and food.

So what is the name of this place for great pie in lanseboro mn?
