IOWA VS IOWA STATE BY POSITION

i think saying Arnaud is better than Jake is silly

You had a soph qb who dealt with alot of injuries n off the field issues. He was the most sacked qb in the nation, almost all freshman recievers, one of the youngest o-lines in the nation, yet still had 2800 yrds, 15-20 tds, and 6 ints. Arnaud was impressive in the limited time he was in, lets see what he does in a full season.

Too bad S. Greene isn't as good as the top 2 ISU backs.

I hope he is back, less excuses when we shut their run game down again.

Are you kidding? I wouldn't say he's better or worse right now, but I'm pretty sure you've never seen him play if this is your oponion.

I'm very hesitant to predict any wins next season, let alone compare the positions against ISU. And I'd think ISU fans would do the same. I realize that at the end of the season fans saw improvement, but let's not forget it was still a 3 win season with wins against only 1 team with above a .500 record.

I do expect, however, next year's game to be much better than 1 TD and 7 field goals.

I wouldn't say Greene is better than Bass or Robinson. Nobody knows this for sure. Frankly Greene really hasn't touched the ball all that much while Robinson carried the load the last part of this year and really lead the way to ISU's two Big 12 wins. Greene has never carried the load at all and has been a career backup.

He rushed the ball only 32 times in 2006 and had zero receptions. Robinson did that in one game. There is absolutely zero proof that Greene would be better than Robinson. However, it's probably a moot point because he might not even make it back to Iowa.

However, when I look at the teams here is how I feel about them:

QB ISU: Arnaud vs Christensen: Edge: Push
We don't know what Arnaud is going to do, or even if he'll be the starter. Jake has started a full season and I think he'll be better next year.

RB ISU: ARob/Bass vs ?? Edge: Big ISU
No returning experience for Iowa

FB ISU: Ekwelundu vs Williams Edge: ???
I don't even really care here, we don't use a FB much.

WR: ISU: Sumrall, Hamilton vs.Johnson/Cleveland Edge: Push
The experience thing really doesn't shift it much to ISU. All their young guys got good experience and based on the number of JUCO WR's Chiz recruited I don't think he values our experience that much.

TE: ISU: Catlett vs. Myers Edge: Big Iowa
Moeaki and Myers are great TE's, and Catlett was an H-Back last year. We have no idea what to expect from him at the position.

OL: most back for both: Edge: ISU
Iowa's offensive line let Christenson get put on his back like Meyer in 06. Agree here.

DL: ISU: I sr gone, 2 for Iowa Edge: Iowa
Ballard and Clayborn won't be much of a dropoff for Iowa's defensive line that was very solid last year.

LB: ISU both lose 2, Edge: Iowa
Iowa returns AJ Edds who is a very solid player. I do not feel like this is a position of strength at all for ISU.

CB:ISU Bell/Singleton vs. Fletcher Edge: ISU
Bell and Singleton return with a year in the system and Iowa really only returns Fletcher and Bernsteine who didn't see a lot of time.

S: ISU Smith vs Dahlton/Greenwood Edge: Push
I like both team's young players.

Punters: ISU
Iowa's punter was terrible last year

FG: Edge: Iowa
Iowa's guys have the experience but Guyer could be very solid.

FB ISU: Ekwelundu vs Williams Edge: ???

I agree with most of what you said except that we do not use the FB much. Catlett caught 21 passes last year making him 5th on the team. Most of them that I remember he was lined up as a FB/HB. This really was an important position for us. Barkema caught only 18 passes. Perhaps with better o-line play we can use the TE more.

Everyone seems to have Catlett moved over to TE. Is that a guess or is it official from Chizik?

I agree with almost everything posted here.

Greene was a back up to Sims and Young. When he was in the game, he did play well, but he was rarely given a chance.

The only thing I'd argue is punter. Donahue improved 100% by mid-season. He even had 2 or 3 70+ yard punts, including an 83 yard punt that helped swing the Illinois game to Iowa's favor. Of course, for every 70+ yard punt he had, he had an 8 yarder.

I don't really want to argue punting game though, because hopefully this coming season it's not as big of a factor in the games.

Iowa's punter did get a lot of game day experience.

I guess I'm saying that we don't use a power fullback like #29 all that much. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mansfield or Means fill in at that H-Back position that Catlett had last year. But who knows.

I know, I've seen Greene play. He's a good player.

But by this same thinking, I could say that Austen Arnaud was in the game, he did play well, but he really wasn't given a full chance, so he's better than Christensen. You can't have it both ways.

Does it really matter who has the edge. Iowa is a national program, and national program's do not lose at home to inferior opponents.

Note: This post contains sarcasm, and a lot of it.

I'm not trying to have it both ways - you don't know until a player is in the entire game. But in 2006 when JC played, he looked about the same as he did at times this year, so limited game experience can also give a hint as to how a player is going to be.

I do give advantage ISU so running backs. However, just like Arnaud has a very good chance to be a better QB than JC, Greene has a chance at being a better RB.

But I agree - all of this is moot. We've seen these players play in very limited game experience. I was impressed with Greene when he was in, and I was impressed with Arnaud when he played. If Arnaud played like that in every game, then he'd be the obvious choice over JC (at least 2007 JC, I'm still hoping he improves).

But, based on experience, right now, QB is advantage Iowa, and RB is advantage ISU, simply based on the fact that Iowa's QB has started and has gone 7-6, and ISU's RBs have improved immensely and are far more experienced than anything Iowa has coming in.

I thought Moeaki was gone, I didn't realize he was back. With him, I would give advantage Iowa. As for Brodell being back, it doesn't change my opinion one bit. Advantage ISU at WR.

It is always interesting to compare teams position by position but I never really understood how it has any affect on the outcome of the game.

Does it matter if the we have the edge at qb, rb, etc. in head to head situations. They are never on the field at the same time. The real match up to look at is our OL v. their DL and visa versa- that is what will tell who has the edge in the game.

Very very true. Great observation.
