Ah, they could sure build them pretty then!
Feels like it's been non stop for a bout 25 years now.
Unfortunately, I don’t think that is what the post meant. Some people just can’t help themselves it seems. They did kick out the Supreme Court and build them a building across the street. Also moved much of the legislative staff to other buildings. I think it was when maybe the older Bush was coming, the Secret Service had a fit about securing the building with boxes and file cabinets out in hallways and the fairly unlimited access. Things have tightened up quite a bit since then.
I was told once by facilities manager that you have to budget 10% of a buildings value every year for repairs in a building over 50 years old. Churches, government buildings etc. Maybe not every year but in aggregate over the years. It's a huge old building, there's always going to be something needing repair
This is the courthouse in Pocahontas. Population in the county was 7,074 in 2021. The town population was 1,870 in 2021. I had a trial there once and was fairly amazed as I walked up to it.The old courthouses in small towns amaze me. It's hard to picture those getting built today. The cost would be insane. Same thing with old stone churches. Churches with congregations of like 80-100 people that would probably cost $10-$15mill to build today. It wouldn't be possible.

Then you see their namesake’s statue and think some 4th graders made it with paper mache. This is the courthouse in Pocahontas. Population in the county was 7,074 in 2021. The town population was 1,870 in 2021. I had a trial there once and was fairly amazed as I walked up to it.

I've made a hobby of visiting as many state capitols as my travels allow. The midwestern capitols are all beautiful and at the time they were completed they were largely tributes from aging union veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic to their fallen brothers in the war.....a tribute of love and patriotism. Iowa's capitol is the most beautiful IMO.
Which state?

That's remarkable given that it was not even a state for 50 years quite yet at that point.Did you know that Iowa was once one of the 10 most populous US states? In 1895.
We were settled the same time as Ohio. The early folk liked Iowa. That's remarkable given that it was not even a state for 50 years quite yet at that point.
What is the story with What Cheer, Iowa. 3,246 population in 1890, down to 678 in 2000That's remarkable given that it was not even a state for 50 years quite yet at that point.
I believe it was a coal mine boom town until the mines dried up in the early 20th century. It looks like an abrupt population decline in 1910 followed by a gradual decline until present day. What is the story with What Cheer, Iowa. 3,246 population in 1890, down to 678 in 2000
Rough night, I think may head down to What Cheer. What is the story with What Cheer, Iowa. 3,246 population in 1890, down to 678 in 2000
