I had no idea a building like this existed in Des Moines with this sort of interior. I definitely need to visit when I get back to Iowa next time.

Not sure it’s still true to be honest but there was a moment that the only two 5-domed buildings in the world were the Iowa Capitol Building and the Taj Mahal
Feels like it's been non stop for a bout 25 years now.
It's a huge old building, there's always going to be something needing repair
Ha! That YouTube channel also has a video on the Iowa Soldiers and Sailors Monument right next to the state capitol. I always thought that monument has some interesting "artistic" choices on it.

So yes, the Capitol is really nifty!

They give great tours. I love the law library, reminds me of the library in Beauty and the Beast.
Make sure to go into the library. Very cool. There is also a book from the 13th or 14th century on display in there. Even has vellum pages.
It's a pretty unique situation there with all of the shops/bars etc. around there.
I've made a hobby of visiting as many state capitols as my travels allow. The midwestern capitols are all beautiful and at the time they were completed they were largely tributes from aging union veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic to their fallen brothers in the war.....a tribute of love and patriotism. Iowa's capitol is the most beautiful IMO.

Yes, we spent 6 hours within a 5 minute walk from Capitol. Veterans Museum, Heritage Museum, shopping, and dinner at Old Fashioned.
