Iowa: Game Thoughts

I’m convinced that coaches at Iowa State need to move on every 5 years. I honestly think it’s such a hard job that they run out of steam. Dan ran out of it, Campbell ran out of it. It’s like if they move to a new job and get an up and coming guy every 5 years we could have a better shot.

Well that's a interesting concept and I sort of see your point. But it sure would be nice to find our Unicorn coach that wins and wants to be here

I would love to have a Ferentz type coach that stays years . I just think in football it would benefit the coach to move on to an easier program. We would be kmow as a spot a young coach can make a name for himself to get a higher profile job. I think it’s a win win.

We not gonna talk about one of the worst pick 6’s I’ve ever seen in my life?
It was basically Coopers pick 6 reincarnated.

I said to my buddy that first drive when all they did was hit out routes that it was super dangerous throwing that against Iowa. When you do it all game one of them is bound to get picked off. Reminded me of a similar pick that Purdy threw against them a couple years ago.

I’m so sick and tired of trying to out-Iowa Iowa every single year. It’s so obvious to everyone that isn’t the way you beat them and yet they refuse to make the adjustments necessary. This is a generational Iowa State defense and it’s going to be wasted by a piss poor offense. Absolutely no reason think this is going be any different than last year. I cannot believe people on the radio after the game talking like they made some great improvement today.

The run blocking today was abysmal. Continuing to run up the middle all game long was a total failure

Jeremiah Cooper is a stud

Additionally, I am done with Jaylin Noel. He has done nothing for the Cyclones except falter in the big moments
My feeling exactly, we are never going to out Iowa the squawks, but every year the staff has been here we keep trying to do it.

This is Iowa.
They are fine with running the clock and keeping the game close, there defense is in zone coverage abut 90 percent of the time, which means they are trained not to give up the big play. Make the offense drive the field, but since everyone is looking back towards the QB, it allows for plenty of INT, if you jump the pass.
Strong special teams, they are not going to lose games on special teams, nor mental mistakes. Everyone that plays for them its preached from day one, do your job and if everyone does it, we will win a lot more than we lose.

We throw the ball downfield a couple times at most, quick outs do not work against EIU because they are playing a zone defense, there is always a safety to come up to help with support. You have to throw the ball deep to force them to stay back.

One blocked field goal and a pick 6, mistakes you cannot make against EIU.

Every 5 years is a lot of turnover.

Every 5 years is a lot of turnover. No coach is coming to ISU with that hanging over their head and that’s not Pollard’s approach. CMC has exactly want he wants - control over the program w/o big donors in his space. He’s created his own playground.

Is he? When has he ever ran by anyone?

Yeah was close to housing a punt return last week. Other highlight was lots of space vs. Clemson two years ago that showed some promise.

Needs the space to start though and fundamentally I've not seen much good which makes the difference.

And Texas last year I think. Some of it is the routes they have him run. But obviously you can not drop balls.

I really hope this is the last year of the Ferentz regime.

The Offense (Positives, Negatives, and what I'm neutral on)
- Positive: Abu Sama has some real potential. Only had 25 yards as Norton got the lion's share of carries. But anyone who knows football can see that this guy has some ability. Ability with burst, and make you miss. He reminds me of Alexander Robinson, good back we had in the Rhoads years.
- Jayden Higgins is a dawg, 95 yards and 1 TD. We should have gone to him more downfield today. He has high end ability.
- Ben Brahmer, this guy catches everything. In two games he is already better than Easton Dean. He's going to be special.
- Negatives: Jaylin Noel. I am sorry, I can't accept that this guy is our #2 receiver moving forward. Against UNI he had 4 receptions for 6 yards (not a typo). Today he has 3 drops, and he had 8 catches for a 6 yard average. He tends to NOT break any tackles, or take a small catch for a YAC gain. I'd frankly rather see more throws go to Jayden Higgins, Ben Brahmer, Aidan Bitter, or even Dimitri Stanley (he can burn people deep). He stayed in the game after all these drops which I can only shake my head at.
- Negatives: The lack of downfield throwing. Why not test Iowa's other corner (opposite Dejean) down the field more often? Again, keeping everything tight play's right into Iowa's hands. Daniel Jackson had a nice 13 yard catch, Higgins had a couple past 10 yards. Don't know why we didn't stress them more.
- Negative: I love Cartevious Norton as the hammer back and the short yardage back. But he has no business running out routes, he doesn't have the speed or bend to do this. IF we are going to complement a RB in the pass game, make that Abu Sama please.
- Neutral: O Line. We did have 90 yards rushing against what will be the toughest D we will face this year. I think this O line will get better as the year goes along. But they are in "prove it" mode for sure. For me it is too early to condemn them as similar to last year. I'm actually excited to see them in league play.
- Neutral: Scheelhaase. The UNI game is always strange, and Iowa is always very talented. Let's see how he does against Ohio and the Big 12. There were too many out rout passes today. I'll also say, we HAVE TO make defenses account for Rocco as a runner more. We cannot treat him like a glass doll, he has to run for some yards 4-5 times a game. That cost us the 4th down today obviously. Hopefully that is coached back into him moving forward.

Defense
- What can you say? The rest of the staff should be treating Heacock to steak dinners every month. Many games would be out of hand if not for the brillian play of our defense.
- Beau Freyler today looked like a high level NFL strong safety. Tackles well, big size, and makes key hits.
- Jeremiah Cooper is "Honey Badger Light". Man what a hell of a player.
- Cade McNamara was a little too comfy at times. We had some blitzes that narrowly missed. That's football I guess.

Misc.
- I think we as a fanbase can somewhat worry less and less about ND and Ohio State poaching our coach. Why? Look at his record in the Iowa rivalry and in close games the last 3 years.
- The biggest thing I want to see from now until the end of the season is offensive improvement. We need to be more creative on offense, mix in varying tempo's, and just keep defenses honest more. I think this includes more sprinkled in QB zone read runs, down field tosses, different plays in the run game. The shotgun handoff up the middle is a staple, and we have to deviate off of it when it's not working.
great post! Although I'm not sure they will be the best defense, Texas looks really good.

As bad as Noel was as a receiver, he was worse as a kick returner. Generally indecisive, when he did make a decision it was the wrong one. His nonchalant "no look" kickoff touchback was a foot from being catastrophic. I believe somebody else was back for the final EIU punt which went out of bounds.

Darryl Simmons Jr. is a turnstile and I have no idea why we continue running him out there. Seriously, we don't have anybody better than 55 on our roster? I know he was voted HM All Conference by the Big XII coaches last year, and I'm sure they did it so we'd keep playing him!!!

CMC - I'm annoyed with the coach speak and the system has stalled - play to win!!!
Bingo on Noel. He has zero business returning punts or kickoffs.

I like Rocco. I don't think he's the problem, not at all.

But I would start JJ for one simple reason... and not because he might leave...

he's the first QB since, IDK, a long time, who probably has the arm to consistently push the ball down field. That opens up a play book, opens up the running game and he's not a stiff so he can also move. He'll make young player mistakes but he brings something we don't have and haven't had.

Throwing deep isn't just about having receivers who can run. Obviously that's part of it. But just as important is having a QB who can consistently get the ball down field with pace. And its not like Rocco's a super experienced veteran. Whoever is at QB is going to make young mistakes.

So for me, I'd roll the dice on the higher ceiling kid. Who I think is JJ.

Rocco isn't the problem, not at all. He's not playing badly. I also don't know if he's the solution. I don't know that JJ is either but IMO his physical traits give him a slight edge

I'd also give Gaines time at receiver, just to see what we have. I'd throw to Bitter more because he seems reliable and reminds me a little of Akers. And I'd roll with Sama, Norton and maybe even Hansen at RB / KOR etc.

Basically I'd dub this the year of the freshie on offense at skill position

Where are we going to get our wins? It’s looking like maybe 4 again if we’re lucky. I think our D will always give us a chance but if we can’t figure out how to score it’s going to be another frustrating season.

Awesome post and I was thinking almost exactly the same.

Didn’t do this the first year. Had Jacob park and Montgomery. Let the QB run and played loose and put up points.

But every other year so damn scared of this defense. I get they are good but you’re out here calling plays like they are the 85 Bears.
