IOWA CITY, Iowa - Total crimes and arrests at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University are outpacing last year's totals.

482 University of Iowa students were charged with crimes in the first 6 months of 2012 compared to 370 students in 2011, according to a quarterly report released to the Board of Regents for next week's meeting in Ames. 387 Iowa State students were arrested in the first half of 2012, as opposed to 323 in 2011.

Drunkenness accounted for the largest increase in offenses at the UI -- going from 132 in the first six months of 2011 to 219 in the first half of this year. Arrests and offenses of drunkenness surged in the second half of 2011.

However, over all alcohol-related charges at UI remained relatively steady compared to last year, helped by a big drop in liquor law violations.

ISU, meanwhile, saw a slight increase in alcohol-related charges in the first half of 2012, going from 173 students arrested in 2011 to 207 arrested so far this year.
