See it causes me issues falling asleep. I get in a loop thinking about the song then wondering whats wrong with me. It's a vicious circle some nights. Like right now I have the the refrain from electric avenue song in my head and I have no clue why.

Try classical music

Yeah, my brain is never silent. Never has been. Even if I'm not having a conversation, I'm actively imagining something.

Kinda wonder if this is what causes people to be introverted or extroverted? If you have an inner dialog, there’s no need to talk to other people. If you don’t, then you think others want to talk to you.

Anecdotal but I have a constant dialogue going on and I also never shut up

I get that. It could be a line from a song, a commercial jingle, whatever. Playing over and over. That's why I stay away from ear worm threads, as that **** is real.

I read every night until I start dropping the Kindle on my face. Focuses my thoughts on the task at hand until my mind is quiet enough to drop off without too much trouble.

The introverted/extroverted is misunderstood by many people, IMO, in regard to self confidence. I think a lack of self confidence can definitely make someone introverted, but I've met a whole lot of extroverts who don't have the self confidence to sit in silence too.

When I read there are people that don't have an internal monologue, I thought that had to be made up. I don't understand the concept of not having one. It blows my mind but also explains a lot about some personalities.

I'm extremely extroverted. I don't think there's a link.

Extrovert/introvert is defined by whether or not being around people charges you up or burns you out. If your idea of recharging is going out and spending time with people, you're extroverted. If your idea of recharging is getting away from people and having time alone, you're introverted.

It seems like a lot of people are on message boards because they're introverts with an interest in a topic, but don't enjoy interacting with people in person RE said topic. I'm on message boards because my interest in interacting with people is so strong that it can wear people out in real life, and these ongoing conversations help fill the gaps in my need for interaction.

So, it appears most people on the forum at least have some kind of dialogue going on. I was baffled when I saw a couple different people claim more than 50% of people don't experience it at all.

For what its worth, I asked a group of people at work today and 3/8 said they don't.

Same thought I had - seems insane to not have one but like you said maybe it explains how some people act/treat others. Though, I am not necessarily saying an internal dialogue makes someone a better person - I have no clue if it does/doesn't.

Honestly, I’m surprised by the other half. 50% have internal dialogue? Monologue I completely understand, but dialogue?

Not only do I have the internal dialogue, but (because I'm not a mouth-breather) I often recognize the exhale through my nostrils seems to emulate the same as if I were actually speaking words aloud. This makes me wonder if others do the same and if it might be possible someday to actually "see" what somebody might be thinking by using a device to monitor their breathing. Far fetched, I'm sure.

My internal dialogue doesn't stop for anything. I can be having a conversation or trying to problem solve and I'm usually thinking about 1 or 2 other things at the same time. Physical exhaustion seems to help that a lot. When I was younger books were a good way to become completely absorbed in a linear thought process.

No offense to those that don’t have one but I think they may be what’s wrong with society. What kind of crazy person just does stuff without thinking out hundreds of variations of how it will go.

100%

When I get really irritated about something I have an internal monologue. Otherwise, I can seemingly flip a switch and not think about anything.
