I don't know why Baylor fans would have been confident. We hammered them twice already before today. Today's game went just like the other two. We destroyed them inside offensively, defensively and on the glass. They had to have a 27% three point shooter go 7/8 from 3pt range to even make it close. This Baylor team has some scorers who can really shoot the ball, but they're soft, undersized and don't play defense. How many dunks and layups have we gotten in the 3 games against them? Perfect matchup for us.There was a tiktok account where a guy has his dad predict all the major conference tourneys. His dad had us losing to Baylor. I commented that ISU was going to shock the world and a few baylor peeps and haters gave me crap. Time to go back and give it back to them now.![]()
To me, it starts with their guards. Cryer and Flagler don't have "it" defensively. They go through the motions but that's about it. They just want to get shots up and don't have the desire defensively. Contrast that to their Butler, Mitchell and Teague 3 guard lineup that wan the National Title. Those 3 were dogs defensively. Last year they at least had Akinjo who defended hard.Agree with this. This version of Baylor does not defend well for whatever reason. They are sort of like a Mayor/Prohm team on that end.

The team that won the title had one of the best backcourts in CBB history. This year's Baylor is soft and undersized. They won a natty 2 years ago so they think they walk on water now.
Appears Grill leaving was addition by subtraction.

I still like Grill and the effort he gave ISU, so not an exact comparison...but it makes me wonder what a midseason dismissal of BDJ could have done for that team's success and postseason.
BDJ was starting in the NBA a season later before he got killed so we're talking about a lot of talent...but that team had several NBA players and more than enough talent to win without him.
Out of gas! (after crossing the finish line with the checkered flag)But if they win the NCAA tournament they wouldn't even be IN any more.
I think they have a top 5 back court in terms of talent and depth, but those most dominant Baylor teams had giant tanks of men or pogo stick forwards who could jump out of the gym. They would crush us on the boards every game and the only way we could hang with them was to not miss shots.
ISU is just objectively much better inside and I'm not sure we're even an elite team for big men. Especially when we are playing Ward/King and have Jaz healthy ISU just has way more length inside.

Baylor guards, while elite scorers, are not very big or physical (6'1", 6'3", 6'4") and really struggle against ISU's tough perimeter defenders and no-middle defensive scheme. Combine that with a sub par (by Baylor standards) inside game and ISU causes them a lot of problems.Great example of bad matchup/good matchup. Same reason we suck against OSU and WVU.
Never thought I would see us outrebound anyone 44-17. That is just work ethic and want to.
