I will effing take it

Yesterday this was on full display as Arizona trailed by 19 in the second half against UCLA and Texas Tech was down 16 at the half against BYU. They both came back and won. It is hard to win on the road in conference play and even harder against good/ranked teams.

#10 Memphis was up 20ish at halftime at home the other night to a marginal USF team and lost.

Some will say 'who cares? I'm worried about ISU!' when the point is that ISU isn't unique in having difficulty maintaining a big lead.

Especially in a league with so much talent and so many guys who can hit threes, the other team hits a couple and you miss some free throws and suddenly a double-digit lead is gone. Happens fast!

How many conference road wins thus far in the season for anyone in this league? Is this the only one over a ranked team on the road??

There's definitely nuances in the conversation. Players stepping up that in Lipsey's absence might be most important in longevity. Guys like Gilbert and Watson may have had their best overall games.

Heck Omaha got in and had a glimpse of what could be to come. I hope that continues because he looks super eager to do well.
Exactly. Lipsey being out sort of took the ‘governor’ off of Gilbert & Jones, so to speak. They had to be the playmakers and may have given them added confidence knowing they’d be playing extended minutes regardless of performance. They made the most of it!

Agree I think Lipsey being out certainly gave us elevated versions of Curtis and Keishon. Would like to see that continue, even when Lipsey returns to the lineup. Winning a Big 12 road game with a starting backcourt of Mountain West and MAC guards is hella impressive, even if the team did surrender most of a 19 point lead. We outplayed them pretty badly all day, but they have a lot of talent, and my opinion at least, the refs were kind of helping them stay in and get back in it. They had a 50% free throw shooter go 8/10 from the line ffs.

Well it must just be that simple. Why doesn't everyone just shoot 100%?

You're the one last that suggested shooting granny style, aren't you? Perfect.
Free throws are a matter of repetition. Muscle memory. Watch our women’s teams from the past few years. They shot around 80% or higher as a team. They were so good they didn’t bother to put people around the key during the shots. I remember Chelsea Poppins who was a horrid free throw shooter as a freshman (62%). She worked hard at it. As a senior she shot 84% on 129 attempts. If men put in as much time on this critical component of the game they would net the same results.

Can you point me in the direction of proof of men not putting the time in?

Like does Tamin Lipsey ignore it?

Not that it's the only reason, but it is a reason: the women's ball is smaller and this has a big effect on shooting.

ISU WBB this year is only shooting 71% compared to 70% for MBB. A lot of that though is from Crooks shooting 62% and she's taken almost a third of the team's attempts (!!). Rest of the WBB team is shooting 76%.

BIG win no matter how you slice it!

Obviously losing all three: Tre, Ward, and Jones is not ideal. I hate looking at next year already but losing all of them sucks. And we all know Rock won't be ready. C"MON portal. And, yes, I've given to We Will three times. C'MON portal. We need 1 impact post plus 1 impact defender in the post. C'MON portal. Like what Watson gives us tho, maybe he can give even more next year???

All in all, BIG win yesterday with or without Tamin!

I would be willing to bet he will be playing next year. Cutting your teeth in practice against BRE, Tre, Ward, Watson, Omaha, etc. is so much better than playing high school games against bad competition. With his size and skill I could see him getting 12-15 minutes a game, and providing much needed size.

Hoping this a catalyst for both of them. Also shows Lipsey does not have to initiate offense the entire game. Though, Lipsey would have made a huge difference in the last 5 minutes.

Would love to see more lineups of Lipsey, Gilbert, C.Jones, Milan/King, and Ward. Athletic on both ends with multiple ball handlers and 3 point threats.

I don't think no matter how many ball handlers on the floor, you can see other teams trying to 'mug' Milan. He just needs to get stronger and keep fighting, as he has. We made just enough '3's that they couldn't totally sag on us. Although the teams that pressure us, especially the passing lanes, seems to be most effective. As do most teams I guess. I hope between Ward and Big Rob that they make half of what they missed in that 10 ft. middle of the lane area. Then I will get excited. Love their effort tho!

Our girls need to keep practicing this yr, not sure of our percentage but it seems lower this yr.
