I was just placed in Welch... (Incoming freshman)

With a Philosophy degree I was expecting something more out of you.

Theres always the Van wilder route I suppose? In fairness I only have 5/6ths of a philsophy degree and 7/8ths of a polisci degree, so I can't do all the heavy lifting.

I use to go to Lied every weekend and state gym I go to 3-4 times a week.

It depends on what you are going to do. Here are advantages of each imo.

Lied- Turf, meaning that you can play football or soccer (this is what I did with my group of friends, if you are a soccer guy, we play friday-sunday).

Weights are on 3rd floor, they aren't bad but was crowded when I went. Haven't lifted there since State reopened so idk what it's like now.

Basketball courts are tiny. I know the basketball players go upstairs to State to shoot so if you were looking for full-court basketball. I recommend State.

Now State Gym-

Running, the track is not as crowded at Lied.

Weights- there's more weights. Lower level is the heavier equipment and upstairs is for running equipment, sit-ups, pull-ups, legs, rowing, etc.

Rock-climbing wall- I believe there is one at Lied as well so don't think it matters.

Full-court basketball courts at State upstairs and downstairs.

To summarize, Lied is where you can play football, frisbee, soccer, etc. State is better for running, working out, and playing basketball or volleyball.

This I disagree with. We tried going to state to play all the time during the school year but it was always packed, and they always "wasted" two of the lower courts with volleyball and badmitten nets. We always ended up walking over to beyer or driving over to leid to get in a game.

I lived in Storms Hall at the Towers south of campus, a long walk to campus, but enjoyed it a lot. My friends from dorm life are still my tailgate gang. We are all best friends years later. Welch may end up being a GREAT place for you. It's all in the people you meet.

Storms Lovelace here, and I loved it! Sad to see them knock it down. I was not sure about being so far from campus originally, but with a bike and CyRide it wasn't bad. I made some great friends I lived with for the next 4 years and we had a great group of guys that were always up for a good time. Like many have said, it will be as good as you make it.

I lived in Welch Bergman for my freshman year in 03. So obviously with this being 10 years ago all my info could be outdated but I would recommend switching. Rooms sucked with no AC, and terribly outdated outlets. I seriously had to duct tape my plugs in place and hope I didn't kick the cord at some point. I had friends in Helser and was pretty envious of their situation, I'd give that a shot if I were you.

Over exaggerating the AC thing because you weren't even on the top floor which is 10 degrees warmer. To the OP, bring a fan and tough it out, it is worth not spending the extra 1200 or whatever it is. And the outlets have been replaced very recently in the whole building. And even more recently in Bergman, Stevenson, Cassell, Dana, Lindstrom and Ayres because of that football hitting the sprinkler and flooding half the building this past year.

Anyway, I lived in Roberts last year and I'm living in Birch this upcoming year. Honestly I was on the floor of Roberts that was apparently the crappiest floor known to man the past 30 years+, we only had a couple people that weren't Freshman so we all became huge friends. It really is what you make of it.

You will come to find living in an all guys building is immensely better because there isn't stupid **** going on to try to impress the ladies on the floor. There are girls in BLF, Linden, Oak-Elm, and MWL which is all within walking distance, it ain't that big of a deal to find poon... (protip: go to Conversations when it is cold outside, its under the all girls dorm and girls don't wanna go outside to get a meal so the ratio is a very good one).

The building is remodeling the Cornerstone hall desk area (where you get the mail and packages, play ping pong, play pool, vending machines). Every hallway was repainted this year with the exception of a couple because they wanted to keep their design. All the dens have been repainted. The building is getting all new carpeting in the hallways. Got a new hot water system this past year (its balls hot!).

BWR's hall council received an award from the DOR for having the best event (Masquerade Ball with Oak-Elm) and the best ongoing activity (BWR Challenge). BWR was also praised for being the most active building on campus and most efficient council. And you have a fellow CFer on council as well (ME )

Idk where you heard all the negatives of BWR but I would assume they lived in the Union Drive area...and would like to know which floor you were placed on

Also forgot to mention, the walk to Jack Trice and Hilton is a trillion times better. My Friley friends are always complaining after a game.

The rooms at Welch are waaaay bigger than MWL rooms.
Kinda sucked that it was all guys on our floor.
Probably wouldn't have been as bad if we hadn't screwed the pooch on the sister floor thing.

Overall I really enjoyed my time in Welch. Met some kewl guys that I'm still friends with.

They do know there are buses from Friley that take you to and from Hilton right?

They are replacing windows in Welch as we speak. And I was in Linden my freshman year and had classes all the way in design. I don't want to hear any complaints.

Don't listen to Goothrey. I had to walk to Town (Engineering Building) which is just north of design. I don't want to hear any complaints.

This! When you first move in leave your door open. Get to know people on your floor, and take part in the BWR challenge! Still have my back to back BWR Challenge champs shirts from 4 years ago. Welch-Bergman!!!

That's like arguing the 5th circle of hell isn't hot because the 6th is warmer. I had a room right above an entrance, so unless I wanted cigarette smoke being blown in the window damn near what seemed like the entire time I had to pretty much boil in my room. Only the first few weeks were bad but still for those 3 weeks I would've killed for some AC. But the best thing about Welch was that it was so awful everyone that could transfer out of it ended up doing just that, and those of us who toughed it out had double rooms all to ourselves. On Bergman there were about 10 of us with our own rooms 2nd semester.

My advice to the OP, make some good friends your first year in the dorm and then get the hell out. Fredriksen is a good alternative.

Back in the dark ages, I dated a guy in Welch. His room was huge but I think it was a triple or something.

My son is in engineering and is in Helser, and he actually loves it there even though it is a dump. As far as the walk to class, I think the importance to him was that he was stuck all year taking Calculus at 8:00 a.m. four days a week. He liked being able to roll out of bed and be in Carver in three minutes if he had to. Welch is at least closer than MWL. Also, you can still just eat lunch at the UDCC if your lunch time is tight.

It's really like everything in life, it's the people that make a difference. You should be able to see the names and majors of others on your floor on Access Plus. Are there many other engineers on your floor? I know my son studied with the guys on his floor and that was important. And even if they aren't in engineering, you can meet people to work with in class.

I was put on 4th floor Beyer House. Any good reviews for that house?

And yeah, apparently most of the people who are in my house are in engineering now that I look at the list. Maybe studying won't be too bad after all.
