Hybrid vs Diesel

Has anyone been around the new Mercedes Bluetec diesels? I have been looking at them a little tonight and they seem like they are a pretty incredible engine.

Depends on how its engineered. 2100 RPM is a whole lot if you've got a bunch of rotating mass. An F1 engine is engineered to run at up to 20k RPM for a reason. and micro gas turbines run at 100,000 rpm for a reason.

Different horses for different courses. The more rotational mass, the lower the RPM. The bigger the engine, the slower you turn it.

I'm sure...I don't know much about the engineering. I just love diesel motors!

You bring back two of them. One for you and one for me......DEAL?

Yeah, I'd love to have one of those small diesel Ford/Mazda trucks. I used to own an '81 Diesel Toyota Hilux, and despite a tendency to gel in supercold weather, it was a nice running, good mileage machine.

You mean like this?

I want one, too. They are slick as snot.

Damn it that's exactly what I want a 4 door ranger with a diesel in it.

Is that thing 4x4 too?

Just to rub the salt in the wound, yes. Yes, it is.

4 door pickup... check.

Small, superefficient diesel engine... check

"real" four wheel drive... check.

Now why in heck cannot it be sold in America? Gotta ask the EPA, DOT and FoMoCo.

I do know that the Smart diesel is supposed to be the cat's rear end. 80 hp at 2400 rpm. I don't think you can beat that with a stick in a small car engine. And mileage is purported to be in the 60+ mpg range
