I agree with most everything said here. But, truthfully HyVee has the worst bags ever made. Our last trip to the Ankeny store, the bagger put two Prego jars, a small jam jar, and two cans in one of those thin, ****-worthless bags, As soon as I lifted it over the edge of the cart at our vehicle the bag rips. One of the Prego jars falls out and shatters turning my "dad" shoes orange....and of course it wasn't my mower shoes either.

HyVee tries, but it will never compare to H-E-B. I miss that grocery chain since moving back from Austin. Fresh salsa, guacamole and tortillas when you walk in. Incredible produce and variety.

Who would have ever guessed opening a boutique women’s clothing area or 2,000 square feet of bath salts/bombs or opening your own restaurants in a highly saturated market or dedicated 10% of your shelf space to drastically overpriced organic/health food or open your own gym all while continuously raising your prices would ever backfire...

I have no complaints about the local Hy Vee on Broadway in Council Bluffs. Perhaps all the bad qualities haven't made it out this far yet, except for the Market Grill which is truly a bad idea. Otherwise, the employees there are still very, very friendly.
It's not rental. It's like a deposit. You get a quarter back when you return the cart to the corral. It's actually a good thing once you finally remember to bring a quarter with you.
It's not as bad in the Midwest but for some reason here in the Southeast there is a LOT of people that can't be bothered to return a cart even if there is a place right nearby. Lots of potential for door dings and runaway carts. You never see stray carts at ALDI.
Cart deserters are the worst. It takes like 2 extra minutes to take it to the cart corral, what a bunch of turds.
You put the quarter in to unhook your cart,you get it back when you put your cart back. it is so they don't have to chase carts all over the parking lot quite a bit of the time you just hand someone that is putting their groceries in their car a quarter and use that cart, sometimes people don't even want the quarter.
I shopped at Aldi's for a long time before my mom would shop there then once a friend of her's told her how great it was it was fine for her to go LOL. Aldi's and Fareway are my go to grocery stores.
With Aldi's you really need to know what's good and what's not. I found some of their bacon, butter, cheese, etc. is fine. I bought some of their crackers and had to throw them away. Then you have other items like peanuts that are no cheaper per ounce than what you can buy at Costco.
H-E-B has superior produce for the same reason HyVee has such good meat. The Rio Grande Valley is one of the chief produce producing areas of the country.
HyVee's meat counter is second only to Fareway.
That's a normal every morning occurrence now since they changed hours. I've been to the Lincolncenter Hy-Vee in the morning and end up dodging pallets of items blocking the aisle. Never go on a Wednesday morning from 6-7! Employees are rushing to change the prices on items that are in there ad along with dodging pallets.
The only good thing is that Starbucks doesn't have a line!

I love the quarter rental. There are some lazy ***** out there that are like "whoa that corral is 5 parking spaces away, lets just push this cart's front end up onto the median here."
I like Hy-Vee for what it is good at. In my town, I find their employee's friendly, the routinely run good deals, and their meat and produce are good.
Where they lose me is the add ons. My local store has become ridiculously crowded. The Market Grille is almost always empty. They added a Starbucks, Claires, the bath bombs, toys, big crates of cheap t-shirts, etc. It's just so crowded and cluttered at this point.

I found that odd too when I started working there and asked about it. I learned there were two stores that had the optical department. The last time they remodeled, hy vee was seeing if it was profitable enough to launch company wide. It wasn't, but the two stores kept them until they needed the space. I think hy vee saw the success shopko was able to attain with their optical department and wanted in on some of that. Shopko Optical even stuck around after Shopko went tits up.
