Howard Brown at QB?

The staff used Purdy's legs in the red zone with a lot of success, especially before Breece became a Touchdown machine. Guessing they thought they'd have the same success with Hunter. I'm sure they'll adjust.
I expect that the adjustment will be tweaking rather than abandoning QB runs in the red zone. The field is more condensed, and safeties are more involved in the run game because they aren't needed to stay high to cover deep balls. Coaches counter the extra guy to block by utilizing the QB as a runner.

A small sample size for Dekkers to come to conclusions. And Iowa's rush defense is always solid- so no surprise they limited Dekkers on the designed power runs.

IMO Dekkers is a solid athlete and can get it done in the run game.

Just a matter if he is the physical, power runner that opposing defenses have trouble stopping, even though they know he's gonna carry the rock- aka Lanning.

Or is Dekkers the surprise ball carrier or guy who can scramble when the pocket breaks down- aka Purdy.

Or maybe he is somewhere between Lanning & Purdy. Manning did have him run 2-3 plays with RB as lead blocker vs. Purdy misdirection designed runs.

I could see Brown do an occasional QB sneak during his career. Wouldn’t even shock me if after a couple and every knows he’s running it he throws a wide open pass. I think the main focus is him at DT right now. But after he gets comfortable there in another year or two they could draw up a package for him on offense.

I’m assuming everyone here knows he played QB in HS. We’ve had a few former QB’s at WR who have thrown a pass or two on a stick play. Lanning had a few plays even though he was a LB, and that’s a little different because he actually played QB here before switching to LB.

OMG! Two games and Hunter is a poor runner. It's fun to read the humor on this site!!!!!!! Now suggest starting Brown at RB and you are on to something.
I think we just try to get used to it.
I’ll stand by my conclusion that SO FAR, Hunter has not shown a knack for running the football and is a “poor” running QB.

I’m all for “setting things up” and “keeping the defense honest” therefore we need to run plays where he keeps the ball during the game, but right now, not in the red zone when points are the goal.

No serious person wants Brown at RB or QB.
Perhaps we keep this to ourselves keep for a while longer. One more game otta about do it.
Brown came to ISU at 288 and is now up to 312.

he's not getting under center anytime soon.

William "the Refrigerator" Perry was 6'2". 335 lbs. playing weight.

How old are you? Whipper snapper! :)

Howard Brown and Easton Dean are the only 2 players I can think of that played QB in HS and are now at a different position. I know X had that pass in the Texas game last year. Not sure who else we have for non-QB passes.

I posted this in another thread about Dekkers's running ability, but I agree with some that he just doesn't have a great feel for running the ball, as of right now. When I watched a replay of the game on Monday, I noticed that a lot of his runs he just seemed hesitant and it resulted in him going right into the defense. There was one play in particular, a few plays before Brock's goal line fumble, where the play was a QB draw with Brock as the lead blocker. Brock went right through the hole that the line created to get a block at the second level, but Dekkers just didn't follow him and instead went right into the o-line where a defensive lineman got off the block and tackled Dekkers for no gain.

All that being said, his overall speed and athleticism still make him a threat. I think it's still worthwhile for Dekkers to run the ball a few times a game to keep the defense honest. Like in that KU game, he still has the potential to break off a big run, while getting 2-5 yards on many of his others. If some of his running instincts improve, or if the Iowa game was just an off day, then he could be a fantastic runner in addition to his very good passing.

Been a few years, but when my kid's team played them in the HS playoffs, HD was more of a draw style quarterback. He would fake the hand off to his RB like play action to an end and then give a quick hint of passing for a split second and by then a huge hole was in the middle and he could just go straight down hill. Obviously he can and probably has changed since then, but many times it's those first years that sets the tone and is harder to break. He doesn't look real comfortable bouncing to the outside.

Not sure why this is such an outlandish take., I'll I'm asking is for no designed QB runs in the red zone, he's been terrible at that play. Much rather see him throwing the ball in the red zone, or running when the pass play breaks down.

How well do you think a “sneak” would work when they put in a 310 lb guy with #99 on his jersey at QB? That kinda feels like it might be telegraphed just a wee tiny bit.

Because A. your sample size for “terrible” is something like two plays, and B. He also threw a pick in the red zone (with that same small sample size), so it seems like you’re being a wee bit selective here.
