How we can get Harrison Barnes

Fred was down to us and Arizona and really was close to committing to Lute. As for Harrison, I still like our chances

I don't like the fact that Harrison says Jake is giving him advice on which systems of college programs will benefit him most. Jake is on record as saying he doesn't think McDermott's system is suited for elite players. I think as time goes on we will have a very slim chance of getting Barnes to come to ISU.

I think this entire "style of play" thing is a joke. If Jake is telling Barnes that GMac's "style" doesn't suit him, that's just false IMO.

GMac's style is not that much different than a lot of schools. Yes it is disciplined and fundamental... but it is not slow down basketall by any means.

How soon we all forget when Wayne Morgan brought his team into the UNI Dome several years ago, and GMac's UNI "slow down" team beat us by about 20 pts and hung nearly 100 points on us. If that is "slow down" basketball, then I'm all for it!

Truth is, GMac has to run the kind of offense that gives us the best chance of winning with the type of players he has to work with. As he gets better players in here, the tempo will go up. We aren't going to be a very big team, so we are going to have to run and gun when we can to overcome our lack of size up front.

I was attending ISU when The Mayor was recruited. It was between us and (I think) UCLA, and he leaned very heavily toward UCLA. One thing that got him to play for ISU is that the student body got involved. I am a bit fuzzy about the details, but I remember students signed some kind of large poster or something, with thousands of signatures, asking him to play for ISU. UCLA tried something similar, but I remember Freddie saying the ISU version was different in that the signatures were from people he knew. Since it worked for Fred Hoiberg, perhaps it could work again.

It was ISU, Stanford, and Arizona.

I see some of you guys have jokingly hinted at doing some shady things. I took it as a joke, and I am sure most of CycloneFanatic will as well. However, we all know how things can be taken out of context. Also, in light of the WJ situation, my opinion is that even joking about such things is bad form. I am not trying to act high and mighty. This is just my opinion. I just think we would be better served by keeping things positive and on the up-and-up.

Then how the heck are we going to get a top 10 prospect? Climb down off that high horse. We need boosters to start giving these elite kids huge gifts starting when they are HS freshmen.

Cyclone Alley won't make a difference. Playing good basketball will. Harrison is to smart to fall for antics.

i say we start a revolution and take over the government here in iowa. then we seceed(sp?) from the union and pass a law making it illegal for outsiders to come into the state (especially ncaa division 1 coaches) and make it extremely hard almost impossible to get a visa to travel out of our newly formed country. (and while were at it lets go ahead and bull doze EIU.)

i think that would prettymuch gift wrap him for us.

Based on that article, we don't have a chance. He wants to play on a championship team, not team that wins 15 -18 games a year. Maybe he is just using us to get more practice for his real school. Time will tell.

Some of the people on here are probably too young to realize how quickly things can change. Eustachy followed up a 15-15 season with a 32-5 season. Fizer became a lottery pick and Tinsley is still making millions. It can happen again, and it only takes 1 or 2 key players to make a difference.

My gut feeling has sunk with this kid. I would love so much if we had him on our team, but there is no way this kid comes to ISU.

maybe Nebraska too.[/QUOTE said:
Osborne wanted him as an QB. I think that he would have done well with that in college, but I doubt if he would have made it to the pros like he did with hoops.

We did this back in the 80s when we were recruiting Glenn Rice as well. I believe Johnny really thought he had Glenn...heck, we all thought we had him and it was a huge downer when he signed with Michigan. I have no doubt that we would have been a Final Four caliber team had Glenn Rice not changed his mind and gone to Michigan.

I think Fred's final three were Stanford, Arizona and us - maybe Nebraska too.

This is true... Nebraska was offering basketball but really wanted him as a QB.

I graduated with Fred (as did Bhos).

One thing that hasn't been brought up yet is that Fred had a girlfirend (now wife) that was attending ISU. They had been dating since his sophomore year.

ANY smart coach would adjust his style of play to whatever suits HB best. I would think you would want to get the most out of your star athlete. That isn't to say just let him run. But I think "styles" can be adapted to suit the talents of players.

All of the talk about illegal recruiting makes me want to vomit. No, all McDermott needs to do is sit Harrison down and tell him, "Hey, opposites attract."

My take from the article is that he is in no hurry to decide and that speaks volumes about the head that's on his shoulders. Yes, you can read into that last line about a championship, but he's also saying that he doesn't know at this point what his style will mature into and that he's looking at a college with a good business school. That alone could eliminate ISU from the running.

However, when looking at Gary Thompson and Fred, there is proof that you can stay in town, be the local hero, and be successful in the business world. Heck, Hoiberg could still easily be elected mayor.

If we want to improve our chances, maybe we could go to all the AHS games and Chant "I-S-U" every time he touches the ball..............
