Chiz was making $1.2M so that should be bottom dollar. Since we are getting 750k from AU, If you split that over 2 years that puts it close to $1.6M.

I think that is about where we are at, JP can offer $1.5 - $1.6 comfortably and hope excitement generates the additional revenue needed beyond year 2.

I just don't think we can get to $2M (unless some donor is very generous).

Is $1.5-$1.6 enough to get a Holtz, Patterson, Stoops, etc.??? Uphill battle I would guess.

Thoughts?

With extras we have to get to $2mil to get Holtz. It will take over $2mil to get Patterson b/c thats what Minny offered him and he turned it down.

Holtz was offered $12 million from Syracuse and he turned it down..dont know how many years that was though.

I think the pay range will be determined by who we hire. If JP can pull off getting some real big name to come to Ames I think he could find the money to pay him.

Keep in mind that if we go after a current head coach we very well might have to use the 750k from AU to pay for a buyout to whoever we hire.

But I'd agree about 1.5 sounds right.

I think we should offer at least $10 million. Then when it comes time to pay, we can fly to Washington and ask for a federal bailout.

Ughhh...I didn't even think about us having to pay a buyout possibly. That would bite.

With incentives, Chizik's contract was $10.2 M over 6 years or $1.7M/year....our budget is now $13 million more...I think we can get to $2 million though it may be tight....

Im thinking we can easily pay 2 million a year for the RIGHT man. I think he shouldve just called up Turners agent after he was denied to talk to him and said "2 million a year" and hung up.

Are they too far along on the east side of JTS to stop and use the money for a coach? I don't know about the rest of you, but I eat enough tailgating that I don't go to the concession stands, and they can just bring in a bunch more ****ters if they already tore the restrooms down.

I'm hoping it's a lot closer to $2m than $1m. At least, based on what that money usually buys you.

But if we get what looks to be a great coach for closer to $1m, I won't complain.

I think Pollard was bracing us for a much larger contract based on his presser comments.

If Pollard decides to pay the big buck to the next coach, I hope it does means 1 of 2 things at least.

1. The coach is worth that money. Has head coaching experience and wants to create something special.

2. If we pay that much, then I hope that will encourage the coach to stick around and not use this place as a stepping stone.

You can not count on there any money being left of the 750K buyout. JP has travel expenses to find a coach. Plus, the previous staff gets paid until June. That is roughly 1 Mil. Then we will have to pay the new staff, so we are going to be paying double salaries. Inside info here, Chiz hasn't called any of the ISU staff yet to come down with him. Pelton played at Auburn and there are a couple from Alabama. Interesting.

When it comes to salary, another thing you have to consider is providing the new coach with the means to hire the staff he needs. Not only do we need the $ to bring in the HC, we also need to guarantee enough for whoever it is to bring in a quality staff. If it's someone like Holtz or Paterson then we'll need $2M a year for the Head Coach, but we'll also need to be able to fork up at least $1.5M and maybe closer to $2M for cooridinators/assistants. I haven't actually crunched the numbers, but I'd be surprised if we had that in our bankroll.
