How do you define "sports"?

A sport is any physical competition where you can directly influence your opponent’s performance. In other words, there has to be some kind of defense. Every other kind of competition is a game.

Golf: game
Tennis: sport
So swimming is a game?

Not really arguing, but just trying to understand the “defense” thing.

This is pretty solid. My older daughter was a cheerleader and involved in competition/state cheer squads throughout high school and, while there's no defense or any direct influence against/by competitors, competition cheer is way more physically and athletically demanding than many other activities that are considered a "sport."

I wouldn't consider golf a sport because although it does require exceptional hand/eye/foot/body coordination, it doesn't require athletic ability, IMO there is a difference. I'd classify golf as a "skill game" along with things like bowling, darts, billiards.
One thing I should have clarified that is always brought up in these conversations: sports, competitions, and games aren't different tiers where one category is better or more difficult than the others. I acknowledge things like track, cheer, swimming, dance, etc are extremely physically demanding and difficult, but I don't consider them sports. That doesn't mean I think any less of them or those who compete in them.

Just because you're not good at it doesn't mean the activity itself isn't a sport.
I think they are sports, but you said golf wasn't a sport because it doesn't require athletic ability, but no or maybe very few sports require athletic ability to just play.

And that's where I'd veer off, because I would definitely consider track, swimming sports mainly because even though there's no defense or direct impact on your competitors they don't involve subjective scoring.

I do agree that none of this indicates one being better than others based on how they're classified.

Also, match play golf? How I play and do on a hole is going to affect how my competitor plays the hole and/or shot, so:

Stroke play = game?
Match play = sport?

Yeah I could've worded it better. I don't think golf is a sport because while it does involve lots of bodily coordination it doesn't involve anything that's physically taxing, such as running, jumping, throwing, kicking, etc. IMO for something to be a sport it needs to be more physically demanding than walking.

I keep trying to decide if I agree or disagree with this.

I think of taxing physical activities like running, swimming, biking, parkour, snow boarding, etc that people can do leisurely on their own or competitively against another person's time.

So does that make gymnastics, cross country, and track & field all be games then? No one is playing defense in the men's 100m dash or the women's vault but those are definitively sports in my mind.

Are only certain events in the Olympics sports versus games?

Are the X Games sports or games?

Are E-sports sports?

While tag and frisbee are games, ultimate tag and ultimate frisbee require the coordination and dexterity that most people consider are needed to be considered a sport, along with having someone actively trying to stop you.

Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, track, horse racing and fishing are sports. The rest I don't give a @@@@ about, so they aren't sports in my world. :)

If you hunt bears and sharks with your fists, it's a sport.

I think all hunting should be done with bows or spears. No guns allowed. Nothing against guns. Just makes it more fair for the critters. More of a rush. Aiming a bow or spear at a lion or grizzly would really get the blood pumping IMO.

I think everyone has their own definition and opinion and they aren't necessarily wrong. I think we tend to say a sport is something that requires running, jumping or at least something physical. I used to have a problem with car racing, pool and poker being a sport but I've kind of landed on a sport being anything where you compete for a prize. Whether it be a trophy, money, medal or just bragging rights.

The fish aren’t playing defense though!

I disagree, some are definitely wrong, like by definition wrong.

This is why I felt the need to include a third category: competitions. I don't consider any of the activities you just listed to be sports, but they're extremely difficult and physically demanding so they're not games, either.
