How bad is Allegiant?

Just noticed they’re flying direct btw DSM and Newark now (would be good for me).

Never used them before, but they are suspiciously cheap.

Avoid? Or go for it?

We flew this route last November. Worked great for a cheap flight to NYC. Only problem is it is a haul into Manhattan (train) Penn station. Uber is at least $50-60 bucks or more depending on traffic.

Taken that flight many times. Gotta navigate the NJ Transit to Penn station. Recommend getting the NJT tix online and have them on your phone. Only get one ways though.

Yeah we’re in Jersey. Only other way for us to fly direct to DSM is to go (around Manhattan) to LaGuardia. (There used to be a few more options from Newark to DSM pre-Covid)

Just flew to San Diego direct from DSM. Service in the terminal and on the plane was fine, similar level to what we expected given what we paid. Prices are so low because you can pick and choose what you want for services, down to small details - they’ll even have things like charging $10 for a printed boarding pass at the airport, we downloaded the digital ones and had no issues, so there is another part of your traditional ticket price that’s not included. If you don’t care where you sit and take very little with you for baggage, it can be insanely cheap. The cost for various fees isn’t bad, though. We paid a bit extra for more legroom, checked bag, and boarding early and it still was significantly cheaper than any other airline would have been.

Drawbacks - because Allegiant doesn’t always employ enough crew at airports, you can get stuck for 20-30 minutes waiting to be towed to your gate like we were after landing in DSM. They try and schedule lots of departures or arrivals during limited windows of time so they don’t have to pay for staffing at all hours of the day. Also, there is no internet access or any in-flight entertainment - bring your own device w/headphones or a good book. Overall, we’d use them again as there is nothing that was particularly bad about the experience, and you can’t beat a nonstop flight. It’s expensive to fly on any airline, which is why we rarely do it, but companies like Allegiant make it possible for us to go places we wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford.

I flew them the first time from Provo to Chicago a week ago (and then on to Ames).

$129 RT and the 4 of us shared one suitcase for $70. So we knew what we were getting into and I was pleasantly surprised.

We do have to go back though, the jury is still out …

Flown them many times between CID/MLI and Sanford/Orlando. Never any serious issues. Only risk is they have limited flights on limited days to destinations so always book early in the day if at all possible. If there's a cancellation the options are almost nil versus one of the bigger airlines.

It's $70 bucks for each checked bag?
Just flew to phx/Mesa last month. It’s 35$ per hour over head-carry on each way. That was 140$ for both of us to get our carry on down and back., plus all the other fees.
Total was 760$ for 2 of us from Cedar Rapids.
On time and no issues

Flown them many times. You'll get to where you want to go cheaper than most other airlines and direct. It's certainly not nice, but if you aren't flying first class flying is going to suck no matter what so you may as well save some money. From what I remember the seats don’t recline, so depending on where you fall in that great debate that could be a positive or a negative.

I fly them once a year. Every other time I say I'm done with them.
A lot of airports now you don't need to go up to the counter, you can just use the touchscreen, and I haven't seen that in Allegiant drop offs yet.

Their seats are the worst. The tray table is the size of my phone.

currently at the airport now waiting on an allegiant flight back to DSM….

Allegiant is good if you are a no thrills kind of person. The seats suck. The legroom isn’t great. No Wi-Fi or entertainment. No free snacks.

If you are trying to get to point A to point B for cheap, its a good option. You do pay for checked bags and carry on. Pre paying saving you money. A lot of direct flights out of DSM.
