Bill Simmons is great. He writes a crap-ton, but most of it is worth reading if you enjoy basketball and enjoy humor.
Bill Simmons gives me hope that one day I could do what he does (maybe).
The Book of Basketball gives a great history of the NBA, and although it is extremely long, it is hard to put down.
I don't much care for the NBA, but love Bill Simmons. I KNOW about the NBA, just don't really like to watch it much. You think I'd like this book?
Oh, and this is a good book.
I finished Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich a while back. It was a very good read about someone before my time that I really wish I could have seen play.
I watch usually only the playoffs. I feel that if you enjoy the old NBA (70's and 80's) and enjoy just general knowledge about sports, as well as a humorous read you will like it.
Shirley's book was pretty entertaining. Obviously you know about who is is talking about during his ISU days so it gives a insider touch. I found the overseas lifestyle and commentary more interesting though.
Loved this book. It's long and there is a lot of info, but he keeps it pretty light. He has some great analogies and ways of thinking about things. Some of his "what-ifs" are awesome because of the extent to which he extends the scenarios. Also some of his trade talk is incredibly interesting because of how far out he takes the effects. I happen to think he would make a great GM or front office guy because of his understanding.
I 2nd this, if you havent read it, its a must read. Not only does it give insight to ISU, it also gives you an inside look at what the NBA is really like and what its like overseas. Whether you like him or not (im assuming not) it really is fantastic.
I was going to list this too. Great book, and I'm sure those who watched him play would appreciate it even more than I did.
