It doesn’t. My brother built in Wisconsin and had to hire a contractor even though he was more than capable. Most states don’t allow you to work on the electrical unless you actually live in it. New houses specifically. Remodels are different.

In tennessee you are allowed to do your own wiring (which is crazy). I pulled permits and they come and check everything out to make sure it is legit. I know a home inspector that I regularly consult with to make sure things are to code and safe. He just wasn't answering his phone and I have a drywall crew coming tomorrow morning so time was/is of the essence.

That’s not crazy, all states I know of allow it. The main thing is if you have a questions, never hesitate to ask, like you did. Better safe than sorry.
If you know enough to wire your house, you should know running a heavier gauge is perfectly ok. Im not an electrician by any means but it’s basic stuff.
Some of that old stuff is all black though. Ran into some of that on a building site we bought. Had to use PVC pipe to turn stuff on the first time to see if you had things right. Nothing like seeing an arc running about 4 foot up a box.
Don’t forget about switch legs when someone uses 12/2 or 14/2 and the power is in the light box.
Oh yea I know, nothing in electrical world ends up perfect though.
I will say, the confusion of a greenhorn when they open a box with a white wire tied into a bunch of black wires for the first time is priceless though. The smoke starts coming out of there ears trying to solve the “problem”
I use asbestos insulated wiring and ceramic insulators in my home wiring. Ground wires are for sissies! But I'm old school like that
