Holy hell

Love Campbell but coaching to lose…makes you lose.
Love Campbell too, I think we all do. But he needs to react to this in a way we fans can understand. I'm afraid we will get some more cryptic coach speak in describing this loss. Taking the blame will be good but making some discrete changes will be better.

I'm not saying he needs to fire people this week, but he needs to make a bold statement regarding the loss. He needs to take responsibility for this team and the offense as well but more than just words. [I haven't listened to any coaching statements yet.] The offense was a glaring example of ineptitude yesterday, but it was not the first time and there is now a pattern.

Manning, Myers, and ST's are in the immediate crosshairs. Campbell also might need to address over coaching and micromanagement perhaps, I don't know. He bears a good deal of responsibility for this offense and team, and lack of preparation, confusion at times.

I'm going to try to pay more attention to other games and see if bad miscommunication between QB and receivers is as prevalent as it seems it is with ISU.

Especially by the 5th game.

This is the first time I’ve felt CMC deserves some actual heat. Now that I’ve calmed down…lol, it was terrible coaching yesterday offensively especially but the extra point snap, the muffed punt, 3 missed field goals and field position given up on kickoffs is atrocious and that’s all on coaching

I am hoping at some point he has a revelation offensively like he did after the Iowa game in year 2 defensively.

We can't keep playing this conservative offensively and not getting any benefit from it.

Special teams just has to play better. Special teams can be fixed. The offense needs different kind of help.

Good. And the confusion at times in play calling. Waiting 'till the last second and then hurrying on a crucial play, or having a penalty at a crucial time. Words being spoken on the sidelines. The team feeling rushed and having to think too much. Couple that with offensive predictability that is easily defended.

What does some of that say?

J. Stanz nailed it in his summary article:

The Cyclone defense held one of the best offenses in all of college football more than 250 yards and 34.5 points below their season averages. They held Kansas’ early-season Heisman contender quarterback Jalon Daniels to his worst game of the season by a wide margin.

And, yet, Iowa State lost on Saturday in Lawrence due in large part to its offense’s inability to convert inside of Kansas territory and the complete ineptitude of nearly its entire special teams unit

J. Stanz nailed it in his summary article:
I’ll say it again. Noel deserves to be taken off punt return team for a while or indefinitely. Get someone back there who can take a fair catch when needed to at the 8 yard line, or fair catch it when the game is at a critical point

Not many Hall of Fame coaches would choose to kick a FG for the tie in that situation. There were 60 seconds left on the clock when we lined up with 4th and a foot. And despite what many are saying, our OL wasn't playing that bad.
Our OL was straight trash yesterday. Couldn’t handle simple stunts by the KU DL. Had to throw shallow crossing routes because that’s all HD had time for before taking sacks (and he took too many of those).

Really really hoping for some good news regarding the injuries to J. Brock or C. Norton.

Not too optimistic given Norton didn’t even make the trip yesterday.

Sanders and Silas are OK third and fourth string options, but showed yesterday that they cannot find sustained success throughout the entirety of a game in the Big 12. Silas - too small and undisciplined. Sanders - not there yet in terms of vision and ability to make people miss. Both are not great pass blockers as well.

It is necessary that the five best offensive lineman are identified this week during practice, and given the opportunity to start/gel. There was a lot of shuffling/switching of personnel yesterday causing miscommunication vs a subpar Kansas front. That should not happen.

Huge leg? What?
Well I'll begin by pointing out that his two doinks were from 39 and 46 yards respectively, and they both hit about 3/4 the way up the goalpost. He absolutely hammered the 46 yarder, it might have had the distance from 60.

It was a tough day for the very young kid, but he is talented and I hope he can bounce back from this.

"Gilbert recently attended Kohl's National Scholarship Camp in July of 2021. He was impressive in all three areas at camp. He displayed a very strong leg and was very consistent throughout camp. His punting has improved dramatically since the winter. In July of 2020, he charted 27 points in the field goal portion of camp and 108.51 points in punting. In July of 2021 and had a KO score of 112 at the National Scholarship Camp. Gilbert is a strong powerful specialist with the potential to continue to play early in college!"

I think most of us can agree that we don't REALLY "blame" the kicker himself. He was having a bad day. He's a freshman. He's not even our original recruit. Should he have done better? Yeah. He literally missed the first two kicks by inches, and kicking is a mental thing.

Should we have needed a field goal to TIE a KU team that only generated barely 200 yards of offense? No.

We have come full circle as Iowa States fans and losing because kickers (i use that loosely, obviously we could have won the game in other factors).

I also would love for a reporter to nail Campbell on for someone who constantly preaches "winning within the margins" we have been terrible within the margin for 2-3 years now

Yeah, I've been hoping for a similar "road to Damascus" epiphany for CMC for a few years now regarding ST and OL / offensive scheme. I thought hiring the former NFL analyst was a great step, but apparently that didn't work either. CMC SEEMS like the kind of guy who can step outside himself and see that problem and go try to solve the problem. Yet here we are.

I feel sorry for the kid; I think we all do. I hope he can bounce back.

And the next time I see his pic, I hope it will be some beautiful, long, game-winning kick.

He was 5 for 5 until last week. I think he will be fine. He did make his FG against the Hoks.. which gave us a victory. Campbell should have gone for it on 4th down (even without the hindsight). The kid was having a tough day, so putting him out there with everything on his shoulders was a bad idea. Even if he hits it, no guarantees ISU wins.

The all white uniforms was our indication this was not going to end well. Everyone might like the look of them, but up to this point they are o-fer wearing them. I kinda like winning, so I'm good with never seeing it again.

They won't. As I said before, they know that if they start putting pressure on him to change stuff he might not want to that he has all the options in the world to bail out.

This. Wasn’t that ‘05 KU game where we got one of those infamous Big 12 apology letters? I seem to remember we ended up “losing” in overtime.

That ‘04 Missouri game wrecked me. Seriously. I remember I had the in-laws over that day and the wife made sure I played gracious host. Missed a lot of it…went into the bedroom and caught the 4th quarter including the shanked field goal. Brother- in -law went looking for me later and found me staring at the screen mumbling to myself. Soul crushing…absolutely soul crushing. Ask anyone, I was never the same after that
Both derailed our Big 12 title game hopes.

‘05 at KU was worst loss I experienced as a fan

I introduced myself to JP and DR G after the game. They were speechless.

I was with you until the last paragraph. We shoulda kept the red facemasks!
That was the problem right there! :D

I think we are both being facetious, to some degree. I have no problem wearing the w/w/w again. Next time we do though, we need to wear a better game plan, and oh yeah, play better!

That was brutal. Poor kid has be 18 or 19 years old and has a huge leg. Two doinks and an absolute shank. What can ya do.
I just wanted to clarify my post is not intended in any way to put this on the kicker. As others have said, the game should have never come down to that.

Instead, I was trying to defend the point I made about him having a "huge leg", which I stand by. Perhaps some think he doesn't have a huge leg, but rather a big one, which is kind of splitting hairs.

More importantly, I was trying to be as positive as possible about the future at place kicker, a position which might be our worst position of all time, historically speaking. Which I think we can all agree is really saying something at ISU if that statement is true or even just arguably true.

Place kicking has been a real problem more often than not to say the least. I'm fully aware we have a lot of things to get better at, but leg strength from our freshman place kicker appears as though it is not a problem far as I can tell. We are all down, and its hard to be objective under the circumstances, I get it.

Most people don't want to rewatch those kicks, which i also get, but they objectively had plenty of distance. It's not a good look to start creating problems where they don't exist. That's not a luxury we can afford at ISU, we have plenty of real problems to worry about. That is all.
