I’m hoping Nebraska. Just out of decency towards us since he’ll be looking to bolt to the nba ASAP.

I really don't know, I could see benefits to both assuming the offers were equal.

He was a role player in the nba, and he coached at Iowa State.

Love Fred, but let’s not pretend this was Penny Hardaway going back to memphis, or Clyde Drexler going back to Houston.

I think he would have. He doesn't seem to have any allegiance whatsoever, or love, for ISU anymore it seems.

I'm sorry you feel that way. Fred does seem to legitimately love ISU and it's fans. He just didn't like the pressure of coaching here. When he took the job, we were the only place that would even look at him. Once he became successful he immediately started looking for a way out.

He's always been Ames' favorite son. He can't risk that. Think about it. If you think this board is insane over him going to NU, imagine having him in Ames and having to fire him eventually. It would be a **** show for all time.

Both JP and Fred got what they needed from his time here, and now they've moved on. Him leaving for an NBA job was the best scenario for our fans to deal with, but his eventual return to coaching in college was going to rankle wherever it was. The fact that the Husker job is the best fit geographically and financially for them has more to do with his making that choice than it being a slap in ISU's face.

It's going to be ok. Pull yourselves together.

Would our AD be consistently trying to play the hometown discount card or would we play him close to the 3.6 million like Nebraska? There in lies the answer to your hypothetical.

Completely agree. He can still love Iowa State and not be our coach

I forgot about Krueger. He coached Florida to the Final Four as well.

Good perspective.
 
After a few days, I am trying to look at the bright side that maybe we get to see him make Fran mad enough to throw a chair in conferences play, but I do worry about competition with recruiting and transfers. If NU starts having legit success, living in Omaha is going to be insufferable.

It’s very obvious this has been in place for a while now.

It will be very interesting to see how the next two recruiting cycles. See what kind of traction he gets. What he did here was revolutionary, he changed the way things are done in terms of recruiting.

Now that it’s more commonplace, and he will have to fight for guys more than he had to here, what type of player is he going to be able to get?

Of course he can. Except for a extreme minority I don't think anyone thinks he is doing this to spite ISU. Just because he "loves" ISU doesn't mean we have to hold him in the same regard. Legacy is a tricky thing, and he was probably #1 at ISU. That's a high standard to maintain. In my eyes, and many others, this brings him down quite a few notches. ISU was his dream job... no it wasnt. He was only leaving because he wanted to coach in the NBA. His health gave him limited time to coach and he hated the babysitting and recruiting at the college level. BS. The narrative we were fed on the way out was a bunch of crap.

Now not only is he returning to college, but he is moving in next door to one of the schools Iowans hate the most and will put him in direct competition for recruiting and a constant presence in the Iowa media. Sorry, he doesn't deserve to be held in the same standing as he was. I wish him the best personally, but it is perfectly understandable that an Iowa State fan would not root for Nebraska. As someone correctly said, he doesn't give a **** what we think about his legacy. If he doesn't give a **** about that we shouldn't be obligated to cheer for him at another school, especially Nebraska. We certainly dont have to be happy about it.

Not happy about it, and not rooting for any kind of success in Lincoln either but the reality is that the ONLY thing than could jeopardize Hoiberg's legacy at ISU, is failing as ISU's coach.

By leaving Ames as a winner, his legacy is secure no matter what happens to him elsewhere after that. And we have his cult here as proof of that.
