Hilton sounded quiet/dead....

It got pretty loud a couple times in the second half...

... and then Prohm would call a timeout. W. T. F.

I still can't figure CSP out quite yet. If any of you have this recorded go back and watch the second half and how listless our guys looked right up until the crowd got into it during a run, and then they were amped (chicken or egg potentially too)! And then Prohm calls a timeout, crowd goes dormant, TTU stays close. It is so freaking weird and Prohm does it over and over.

I'm not sure you all know what quiet/dead really sounds like. Granted, this was over break against the mighty 'Roos of UMKC...but this is our reality now. Good times. Fun times. We may have to borrow Baylor's old tarp they used to cover up seats before they got good in football.

He called those timeouts to give the guys some rest because he knew he was going to ride the starters until the end.

Along with rest before playing D, I think he also called a couple to make sure the guys were set and focused on what they needed to do on the next defensive possession. FWIW, I thought it was a bit unusual, but a good use of TOs.

I think nearly all of his timeouts are related to our short rotation. He calls them when someone looks gassed.

That is truly amazing how much that place has changed in 10 years.

I think CSP is trying to tailor his game management to what he thinks the team needs without factoring Hilton Magic into the equation. I like it. He's only been part of The Magic for 10 or so games, so it's too early for him to be relying on it to back him up.

Do what you think needs done, and work The Magic into the rotation as you get comfortable Coach.

Students weren't there. Even with the students, there will still be some quiet games. It's really no different than the last 4 years. A few of the games we will have threads bringing up the fact that the balcony is only 1/3 full in the student section.

I don't think we'll be running into that issue this year. It's been relatively full/full for crap non conference

Boy, idk about TV, but did I go to the same game as others? I thought the crowd was actually pretty darn good, especially since the students are on break. Exploded on occasion, like some of Matt's big threes, boo'ed the refs on some of the fouls or non/fouls, applauded hustle plays, etc. In fact, we commented about it a couple times about how the 'older than students people' did a great job standing up and making noise/waving during some of those late free throws by Tech.

Btw, that picture of Okie State someone posted is so true. Even when they had a good start last year they had small crowds, but so did OU most of the time. Did anyone watch Nebr at Iowa Tues. night? I only got to catch the game with 5 minutes left, but there were ALOT of empty seats behind both baskets. Did they leave early, or couldn't they re-sell student tickets, or just a poor showing for their conference leading team????

It was fine for a break game, y'all have come to expect waaaaay too much. Don't forget how crappy it was just a little while back.

It got plenty loud at times that totally affected TT. Just alot of factors against the night of the game to be full blown nutty.

Prohm has said (via Hines) that he calls TO after made baskets because he wants to bring the players in on a positive note. I hated the timeout at 4:35 last night from a momentum perspective, but it ensured that we would also get the under-4 media timeout as well - I think rest was definitely a factor for that one.

My sister in law went to OU. She went to the ISU game this past weekend. She texted my wife something to the effect of, "Last time I saw Llyod Noble Center this full was, well, never. I've never seen it this full."

In the early Eddie Sutton salad days, we would make fun of the Sooner basketball crowds. Bandwagon fans, Lloyd Noble Mausoleum, blah blah blah. Yeah, um, about that...

You have good points about the crowd applauding the hustle plays, exploding after made baskets, etc. Generally, our crowd does a good job of those things; and those things are important.

I just wish we were louder when the other team is on defense. That is the time when the crowd should be loud, and it was only loud on defense a couple times sporadically last night. As someone who had the blessing to play in a couple loud environments a few times in college (small college basketball, and nothing like Hilton), I must say that I think the best way the home team crowd can make a difference is to yell when the opposing team is on offense (it disrupts offensive communication, psychologically rattles the other team and often inspires your own team), and get on the refs for borderline or clearly bad calls to subliminally influence them as well.

Thus, I am a little disappointed Hilton isn't louder when it matters (when the opposing team is on defense) against most of our schedule. The students make all the difference. Hilton is deafening and wonderfully loud when we're playing KU, Iowa, big-name out of conference foes, and most in conference foes, but last night was lacking.

I think the tale of GIA shows you the crowd can be lost to complacency and we should continue to nurture and encourage Hilton to be a special place. It is awesome how ISU fans pack the place, but I wish more would participate in the game instead of just spectating. What made Hilton (and still makes Hilton) so special, is that the fans believe they can influence the game. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I can't believe what GIA has become. That place rivaled Hilton (and at times was louder) awhile back. Reminds me of the McDermott years at ISU. *shudders*

Prohm has called a timeout just before a media timeout a lot. He's mentioned the extra rest before in interviews.

But they're rated A on Blum's scale.

All three officials have worked multiple Final 4's. Those assignments are based on grades from the actual coaches. The game had some odd and strange happenings and officials aren't perfect. But for real, that is considered a great crew, maybe didn't have their best half in the first.

Judging crowd noise by how it sounds on TV may be the worst way to do it. Number of mics, mic placement/direction, and how the audio is mixed in the truck all have a huge impact.

Everyone, including the team, was out-of-synch. And usually the people who have the seats normally held by students, are there less frequently so they don't have quite the same passion/intensity.

This is what I was going to say. Watching the game last night, I honestly never feared ISU losing it, but you could just tell something was off last night. I think a part of it was actually the way the game was being called. Just seemed like about the time either team was going to go on a good run, the refs would step in and start slowing the game down.

And all the odd ball missed bunnies as well. It's tough for a crowd to get into the game when it seems like every few scores, there are stretches where nothing really exiting happens.

It about the 8 minute mark Hilton got fired up after Burton's pass to Thomas's 5th three, then Nader threw the ball over Montes head on the easy fast break... oh well glad they won!
