HICKORY PARK

It's an anomaly that HP has duped a community into thinking it is somehow special. It'll never work anywhere else.

It’s not like there has historically been an abundance of dining options in Ames. The food is... fine... and the price is comparatively cheap. But if they’re putting 15k/week through the doors and get mentioned on every national sports broadcast, I don’t think it’s reasonable to say they’ve simply “duped a community.”

Shelby's Southern Smokehouse in Nashua is owned by a guy (Shelby) that used to work at/with Battles. That BBQ sauce is as close to Battles as I have found. It is fantastic.

I had to look up where Nashua is and wow that's in BFE I'll never get close to. Although I know a couple from New Hampton if we ever head that way.

I miss the little things about Battle's, like the Texas Toast and Lemonade.

I miss the old one on Hayward that fit about 12 people in it and the bathroom was about 1.5'x1.5'.
George playing the blues, the wood paneling, the sauce....

Jimmy’s BBQ in Boone is run by a guy that used to work at battles. It’s damn good and the closest I’ve found to the original Battles. My buddy and I had a rotation of battles and Great Plains for lunch back in high school. I miss being able to eat like that and not have it hit the waistline.
