Here comes the doomsday thread, sorry

Sigh, this isn’t a money grab at this point, it’s trying to put rules/policy’s in place that can be regulated since the NCAA can’t do anything.

There also isn’t a P5 any more and their really isn’t a P4, it’s just a P3, I’m a little annoyed the Big12 is left out but that is 100% arrogance

The whole thing (this 20ish years of aggressive realignment) is 100% beyond all doubt a money grab and this is a tiny little news today is 100% a part of the whole big thing.

The money grubbers have really only squeezed out two historic programs with fan bases (Ore St, WSU), stranded two with non active fan bases in a completely ridiculous situation (Cal, Stan) and demoted a few teams that had only recently been demoted (USF, UConn).

Nobody is going to feel that effect in terms of TV ratings, it's only two small fan bases that care and were historically included. Leaving the Big 12 and ACC behind except for 6-8 additions would be a MASSIVE blow to national interest if they truly split away and like others said, if that's not what it's about these A-holes would be including other conferences.

You severely lack perspective on this topic. If Michigan State at three separate times had been very likely headed to the American or Mac you'd understand.

I fail to see how the ACC is "P3" in its current form or in the form where it's 100% likely to be gutted.

Your basketball conference has sucked balls for two decades, let's call basketball P1 or P2 if you want to include the Big East.

I think you’re right that this isn’t a forming of a separate P2 and more about neutering the NCAA. But if you don’t think the step to break off and/or create a separate tier exists on their pathway over the next 10-20 years, you’d be very naive.

If you cut out the other conferences ratings will take a major hit in a future where live sports ratings are already expected to naturally go down. Sure there is a possibility but trying to project 20 years out is a fools errand. Hell by then the southern schools could be under water or we have more CTE evidence that gets football cancelled.

You cannot trust people to want something to be profitable in 20 or 50 years, you can expect people to want to maximize their payday now. This is almost a universal constant in the business world.

Don't disagree. But I think something a lot of people mistake in this whole discussion is looking at current activities and not realizing all of this has always been and will always be incremental. People talk like the last 20 years of realignment happened all at once, but today is merely the byproduct of a bunch of annual steps over 20 years to get here.

None of this is black and white, on or off. The SEC and B1G know they can't simply change everything overnight without massive blowback and repercussions to their own brands. That doesn't mean they don't consciously or subconsciously have a long-term roadmap to something that looks drastically different than today.

Good thing these are institutions of higher learning not businesses. The money made off athletics is not even comparable to the rest of most of these universities

Probably because the ACC has teams people want to see. The new Big 12, as far as football goes, doesn't really have that.

2 or 3 that are guaranteed to be leaving. How big of a brand is Clemson really when they aren’t that great?

The guaranteed gutted ACC has better basketball brands than football brands…even if Duke and UNC both leave they’d still have better basketball than football left.

“What do they have to gain by breaking off?” is my question.

Because they won’t gain money.

Then it's a big 2. We all know the ACC is on borrowed time, but that doesn't promote the Big 12.

The ACC isn’t the P3, the big 12 is, I specifically said that so not sure where the confusion came from. The ACC is one successful lawsuit from dissolving. The Big12 on the other hand has a solid media deal and a group of teams that are currently in lockstep.

Maybe but I doubt it. I’d still watch because I love football and there are some great teams to watch in that bucket. Despite all the changes and outcry over NIL, viewership shows signs of increasing on the horizon, just like they have for big NFL games this year.
But all of that has happened without the intentional disenfranchisement of millions of fans.

I’m talking about those leagues saying “we’re having our own party and none of you can come”.

That move would 100% lower ratings and revenue.

I mean the last time there was an announcement of strategic partnerships, one of the conferences was ransacked for parts. I feel like this is more of a way for the blue bloods to discuss how to shed the dead weight than both conferences joining forces.

Absolutely agree. That's where my comment of this being a 20-year plan is more realistic. I know nobody can predict 20 years out, but I think there will be small incremental steps that take us to a future that looks much different from today. It likely has some sort of revenue tiering, with or without leagues breaking off.

Do Cal and Stanford care about playing power football or even basketball?

They care exactly like the Big Ten cares about “academics”.

I mentioned when I outlined who has really been relegated that they don‘t count because they don’t care. If this was even 1% about academics like you claimed they’d have been the jewel above any Big Ten or Pac school.

By not including the Big12 I totally agree. By trying to make policies that can actually be enforced instead of whatever it is the NCAA is trying to do might actually benefit college sports. The problem is anything will obv be skewed towards helping the conferences with the most money which is less then ideal if that’s the way it plays out.
If? Lol. Sanky already tried a huge power grab with the college playoffs and the whole Texas OU fiasco. Paired with ESPN trying to blow up the big 12 during that. We already know their preferred outcome.
