Have some thoughts about the Offensive Line.

The game was in doubt until the last min of the game after the D got the ball back and Offense could not run out 2 a min clock. All UNI had to do was score a go ahead TD.

The defense had to get back on the field after the offense went three and out. UNI is very bad , they are a 4-6 win team this season.
Have you watched the last 4 years? For whatever reason, our offense is dictated by how much our defense needs them to score.

UNI has some players, several I’d love to have. Can’t wait for them to fold as an athletic department.

I thought there were 10 or 11 OL that could play! I was expecting more substitutions so we could keep fresh and wear down their front 4 but that must not been in the game plan!
We only had 60 snaps- most of the game we couldn’t sustain drives well enough to wear anyone down.

Given how mediocre the OL was I’m surprised they didn’t sub more, but when you’re running sweeps to the short side of the field it probably doesn’t matter

Maybe Breece looked like he missed a couple reads or holes on plays, but thought it was mostly the run blocking push level.

it'll improve as the year goes on, it has the last 3 years.
He said in post game he missed a bunch of holes, but I think that was just Breece being Breece by trying to shield his oline from criticism.

I thought Breece’s vision looked a bit rusty.

I think we need to stretch the field just a bit more. Nonstop swing routes don’t help much.

Brock’s legs need to be a threat too. His RPO with a pump fake has never been as lethal as it was his freshman year.

Also, I need to quit being surprised by this first game crap. I’m not worried. Looking forward to Saturday.

I feel the exact same way about Saturday’s game as I felt about it before the UNI game.

I think some people need to remember that Campbell has said that you need to be able to do things when teams are expecting it. For instance, running it with Breece. I'm completely content with the game yesterday. We won the game. That's truly all that matters, we will always have fans that will complain about what didn't happen, but the fact is we won. Idc that we are ranked 7 and the expectations are high, you chug along and win games even if it's ugly. We won an ugly game, onto the next!

All of this pissing and moaning and finger pointing…after a win.

Might I make a suggestion?

Take a step back, take a deep breath, think about a year ago when someone posted a thread about how Matt Campbell’s career record after the first game meant that he was a mediocre coach…and then think about where things went from there.

There. Feel better now?

They played our style of defense. Muck up the middle and let your athletes get tackles at the C and D gaps. We will be fine.

This isn’t any indication to say we won’t turn it around.

It’s just a recurring pattern I’ve seen with the offensive line over the years. It has games like this where it struggles more than other programs might. The Alabama’s and Ohio State’s of the world don’t have these problems in this kind of game because the talent level is so high that it just doesn’t matter.

Again, it’s not me saying they CAN’T improve and do very well this year. But this is something we should more expect ourselves to be vulnerable in at times.

Geeze, its as if none of you has ever watched ISU play a game before. This is how this staff does things early in the year, and it has always worked out really well. Campbell is quite satisfied winning by 1 and may actually prefer it early on. Great motivator for a team that is probably a little too full of itself. Things are fine. Fans are a little too full of themselves too.

if the OL cant get push on UNI, I dont see how they would against Iowa, which is known for its Line play.

They would have to throw the ball to soften up the middle. Worst part Iowa intercepted Indiana multiple times.

No idea how Manning is going to game plan for Iowa, if he could not for UNI, that played in the spring.

The line wasn’t great. There was a short stretch early in the game where they were re-establishing the line of scrimmage three yards downfield. But the rest of the game, they were getting stood up immediately and Breece had nowhere to run.

And for Pete’s sake, please stop bringing in extra offensive linemen for a “power” set. That was the least productive set the entire day, and guaranteed that we would get zero yardage on the play. When we had first and goal at the 8 (late in the game leading 13-10), we trotted those guys out there for second and third down from the four. Got absolutely manhandled. But why?? Anyone who was paying attention knew that was going to happen. Why did Manning not know that?

I did see some good inside run plays when we widened out our splits. Wish we would do that more often and just let our big five guys do some work there more often.
The big issue is putting Olinemen in the backfield. Linemen are used to firing out low but by 3-5 yards that have become mostly stood up just by themselves. Why a fullback is better to lead since they are used to going low as they do forward.

Lol a terrible throw and a dropped pass that gave Iowa a TD.. Both on out routes.

Best if you don’t watch then.

2. We’re possibly setting this up down the road for teams to scout and then run something surprising out of it in the future that’s unexpected and leads to a big chunk of yardage.
When has a Manning offense ever ‘set something up’? Like, at all (much less the first game of the season). Year after year we hear the same crap about how it’s better to be vanilla in game 1 then in reality it makes absolutely 0 difference in the opponents prep on us (they have 1,000+ hours of video already). Tons of teams jump right into the depths of their playbook right out the gate, successfully. Particularly really experienced teams with supposedly really good offensive lines!

We’ve seen enough of this staff’s starts now to know what to expect offensively in September.

Worked out really well? Ummm, we lost the opener last year.
