At least it got over at a decent time. The Grand View Open last year went after 10 p.m. and everybody was defaulting out so they could go home. I thought it went great, just had to listen and find out who our unattached wrestlers were since they couldn't wear ISU singlets

Even in Iowa State's best seasons of the last 20 years, attendance has been poor.
2002 - senior year for Cael Sanderson and Joe Heskett. Excluding the Iowa dual and Senior Day, here were the home attendance numbers:
#6 ISU vs #25 West Virginia - 1,504
#6 ISU vs #23 Wisconsin - 1,620
#6 ISU vs #11 Northern Iowa - 2,099
#4 ISU vs N.C. State - 2,459
#4 ISU vs #9 Missouri - 2,486
Or how about 2000 - a team that spent all season in the Top 3?

People didn't show up when the team was bringing home NCAA hardware, but a little marketing will cause them to magically show up in droves now? Please.
There was a press release on Thursday announcing the signing. It was pushed to cyclones.com, and the ISU wrestling Facebook and Twitter feeds.
But, I'm sure those people are really big ISU fans -- they just don't happen to have internet access.
Hey, Shadow, what's with the sarcasm? Don't you know any other way to communicate? Can't someone have a different opinion from yours without being bathed in this venom? I enjoy your posts, you are knowledgeable and you do your homework. But the sarcasm is very off-putting.
For Terikuna it doesn't "just happen"--it happens all the time. Last year he didn't place at HN, didn't place at UNI, didn't place at Grand View (where he lost to a true frosh from an Iowa HS who didn't qualify for state his senior year).
Btw, he wrestled 133 two years ago and for the HN last year but 141 after that. He's listed as a 141 pounder and that's where he has competed this year. He's not wrestling up.

To be fair, thinking that putting commercials or advertisements (above what was done for HN open) and thinking more people are going to show up is pretty asinine.
Before it gets said, I know no one said to put up ads, but the publicity it got is the same as its always been.
It's what happens when people stop making sense. You threw a 4,000 average out as an easily attainable number. I showed that ISU barely drew HALF of that when it had really good teams. To expect such a number would require ISU to be a championship-caliber squad, at the very least.
Also, if the people around you had no clue about Boston signing, that's really their own fault. If they are as "faithful" as you claimed, they'd have seen the info Iowa State released. It's kind of like when people ask dippy questions about TV, game start times, or complain when ESPN.com has wrong info -- just go to the ISU website to get ISU info. Seems fairly logical.
What's your deal with Terikuna? I don't remember any expectations for the kid other than the progression you see coming off a redshirt year. I think most would be surprised if he made it to nationals. Whya re you acting like he was supposed to be top 10?
First, Iowa State averaged 4,311 in 2007-08 (Gopher Wrestling Third Nationally in Attendance - University of Minnesota Official Athletic Site) second only to Iowa. So an average of 4,000 is not all that unrealistic, although continuing improvement on the mat will help. So, you and I see different stats, and come to different conclusions. Nothing wrong with that. But Cyclone wrestling proved 6 years ago that 4,000 is indeed a possible target.
But if your idea of marketing is to plunk news on the website and be done with it, you are right. 4,000 is not attainable. But what kind of marketing person considers a website their main marketing tool? It's the place people go to get information, for sure, but we should not expect people to go find the information - we should be getting it out in front of them - that is what marketing is all about. As for Cloneswereall, you talk about commercials and advertisements - again, that is only a very, very small part of marketing. Marketing means getting the news in front of the people - a lot, it means raising their awareness, it means getting the coaches and wrestlers out in public where people develop a sense of ownership for the team. It means generating excitement about the team.
Oh, and if I told you who the people are who sit around me at the meets, you would not make the comment you did and question how faithful they are! Next dual, I'll share your description of them; I am sure they will be impressed!! oops, now I am getting sarcastic. Sorry.

Are you guys CWC members? I am getting emails from Troy Nickerson about the team and CWC has been doing a excellent job of updating CWC website frequently. These are both big improvements from a couple years ago. Add in twitter and facebook updates and I think we are headed in the right direction.
I was a big complainer a couple years ago and I am happy with the direction recently. There is always "Ask the Coach" and see if he answers your question.

I guess the other reason I am so keen on this topic is I am very excited about our progress on the mat. Just as you say Buf87. And I guess I think the guys in the room should be rewarded by a bigger crowd and more excitement about the program by those on the periphery rather than hard core fans of ISU wrestling - who you are all absolutely correct is saying that they will seek out the information they need. So, Clonedad, I will do as you suggested.
PS. I am also impressed by Nickerson - think he was a great get too.

I have zero issues with Terikuna. I have never considered him more than a room guy with some potential should the stars align (he's a longshot). I'm actually a fan.
It is others who have touted him. When I reply with facts I get shouted down. And the whole discussion makes me look like I'm against him when I'm most definitely not. It isn't about him.
I don't remember anyone touting Terikuna much at all. I think some of us where impressed with how he performed (in terms of fight, not wins) when forced into the lineup as a true frosh. My guess is you feel this way, too.
Other than that, the only guy that's really talked him up is the guy from HI (old wrestler dude was his handle, or something similar). And for some reason, I don't want to crap on his optimism.

In 07-08, the Iowa dual was in Ames. That one dual bumped the average season attendance by 1,000. Which is why I specifically mentioned non-Iowa duals it in my previous post. The other home duals in 07-08 averaged right at 3,000.
