Hakeem Butler Cut

Willie Harvey Jr. seems to have been cut as well.

I was listening to a podcast (might have been the Meyer & Blythe one), and they were talking about Hard Knocks and how it was discussed that lots of players this year likely will miss some games due to Covid, so if Cleveland signs him back to the practice squad, there is a good chance he will get on the 53 man roster for a few games.

Where did you get that from? I had the opposite impression . . . (not that I know any insider info)
I don't have the articles at hand, but Cardinals insiders were saying it in his first year before he broke his hand. From his time at ISU, it's more reading between the lines on who was praised by name for working hard and, on the other hand, who had "a lot of potential" but is still working on his "consistency" and "being his best every day" and wasn't an underclassman anymore.

And Lazard bounced around the NFL a little bit until 1. he got consistent catching the routine passes, and 2. Aaron Rodgers took a liking to him. If Butler wants to stick on an NFL roster he’s going to have to do the same thing.
Not sure I’d say Lazard has bounced around teams when he only been a part of the Jags practice squad and now with the Packers as the WR2.

I seem to recall that he was released and re-signed at least a couple of times, maybe by both teams, so I’d say that “bounced around the NFL” before he stuck is fair.

Signed by the Jaguars, waived, put on the practice squad. Eventually signed by the Packers, waived, and put on the practice squad. Eventually resigned to the roster. That is bouncing around, albeit with two teams.

Lazard’s work ethic on and off the field is second to none. If Butler humbles himself he could be in the same boat in a year or 2.

If you do a Google search on Butler right now the Vikings Browns Patriots and Packers come up as top results so he probably at least lands one a practice squad

I saw Wirtel ended up on the practice squad for the Lions. If true, that's a good move considering their current long-snapper is close to retirement.

I hope Spears gets a good look. He is the defensive player that will be missed the most. He played 2 positions on the field two years ago - his own and Lanning.

I'm curious is the 'doesn't catch the easy ones' a critique that people are getting from a news source, or better yet a coach from the Cardinals? I'm just trying to understand if this is just the same people continuing that rhetoric from before he was drafted.

I agree that there is some of that problem with Butler but people said the same thing about Lazard. Besides Butler hasn’t really gotten any opportunity to show anything since he got hurt last year. It is absolutely fair to say that our guys seem to have a tougher time of breaking through.

I'm more of an nba/nba draft fan than NFL with admittedly little knowledge...but I saw no reason at any level that Lazard shouldn't have been drafted.

Not in his college playing career, not in combine numbers compared to the others, and not actually playing nfl games compared to the wrs that got drafted.

That one has to be chalked up that the scouts either collectively screwed up or there actually was a stigma on ISU guys.

If Spears does land on a practice squad it will be because of his instincts and toughness. I think his lack of speed will really hurt his chances though.

I'm very surprised that Wirtel is only on a practice squad. He was perfect on every single snap for four years and college and was pretty good on punt coverage as well. He should be starting somewhere.

I 100% agree. Butler has the talent to play at the NFL level, perhaps at a Pro Bowl level. He just has to decide for himself how badly he wants it. I’m not discrediting he lost a year to his hand injury, and Arizona turned into an extremely crowded spot while he was out. Being released could actually be a blessing. It’s up to him.

That was always a bad situation for Butler. I think it was pretty well established early on that the WR room was crowded in AZ, and his injury didn't help. I think the guy will do well with a fresh start and having a team that needs his services.

No one has spilled the beans yet, but I recall seeing the suggestion here that his initial choice of agents really worked against him.
