Great Plains Sauce & Dough

Great Plains still have that thick, wheat crust? Back in my college days I could put away a lot of pizza, but a couple of slices of theirs and I'd be full. Good to know they are still good and around... I miss Rocky Rococo's pizza and DaVinci's subs. Hickory Park is still good, but not the same as back in the 90's.

Was in the Dells a couple years ago and ran across a Rocky Rococo's. Hadn't had it in 20 years. Man those big hunks of Sausage are awesome. If you up there I highly recommend it for lunch or a take out dinner. I don't know the name of the streets but it's right where the main drag that has all the hotels meets the road with all the main street shops.

Melted to perfection, each and every time. Toppings are loaded under that cheese as well.

Pizza in my area is average at best. Not one stands out in the IC area. I tend to make my own(once again, average at best) or go with the local pizza dude, who ironically calls his place Hawkeye Pizza & Steakhouse. I just call the place by the dude's first name.

I miss Great Plains. I loved playing stakeout, working the room for the next open booth.
They've got two levels now. Don't have to play the stakeout game anymore. However, the line sometimes still reaches the door.

I'll second the comments on Great Plains Sauce & Dough... I ate there last fall for the first time in nearly 30 years. It brought back the memories except that they seemed to have added so many different crust choices that it was confusion. As I recall, back in the very early 80's all they had was that thick whole wheat crust that you ate with honey. That's how they made such a name for themselves.

I also very much second all of the comments about Rocky Rococo Pizza - in memory they're chunky sausage pizza was the best pizza I've ever had. I grew up in Waukon (northeast Iowa) and we'd make the 60 mile run to La Crosse (Wisconsin) just for Rocky Rococo's! I think they still have at least one in La Crosse... might have to make a return trip next time I visit the old farm homestead.

Has anyone tried their cookies? When I go their lunch I always try to get one but they are just like the pizza, very filling and delicious.

There's a Rocky Rococo's in the Madison, WI area... I just remember the name from driving through.

I love Great Plains as well... Eat everything but the crust, then pour out some honey and dip 'em for dessert. Mmm.

Have you tried The Wedge? You can get a single topping large pizza for 7.99 if you ask. It is extremely cheesy pizza and almost tastes homemade.

Oh and Great Plains made me the worst pizza I've ever had.

I'd put Great Plains in the "good but not great" category. Jeff's is the best pizza in Ames. And some of the best pizza around, period. God, I love that place.
Jeff's is decent, some of their specialty pizzas are really good, but I wouldn't say there's really anything great about it.

Yeah, I might just have an attachment to the place because for years it bothered me that Campustown didn't have pizza by the slice, and Jeff's provided that.

Either way, something about Jeff's just does it for me though. It's not flashy, its just good solid pizza.

That I agree with, I've never had a bad pizza from there of all the ones I've tried, and they do have some really good specials some days.

In Ames tonight for daughter's dance recital dress rehearsal and ate at Great Plains for the first time since we left Ames in 1996.

Hasn't changed a bit and the pizza is still awesome.

Now, where to eat on Saturday when we come back up for the actual recital...

I used to love a thick dough on pizzas, but anymore, I prefer the cracker crust. I guess my tastes have changed. I have had a Great Plains pizza before and it was good, but it's not something I would probably order today.

I know I'm gonna get blasted for this, but I tried Great Plains one time and absolutely hated it. About 5 lbs of cheese on a pizza.

I'm in. Great Plains-- The Worst Pizza. It's like the economy pizza or something, see how many toppings you can jam into a slice of pizza. Here's a note: that doesn't make it better.

I have no problem saying that Jeff's is my favorite pizza. Same reasons: it isn't fancy, it's just good.

Try the thin crust, it's really good.

For all the haters, the best is the canadian bacon with extra cheese on the thick wheat crust. When you take the first slice out, there is enough extra cheese that slides off the adjacent pieces to fill the gap. So delicious.

Also, I prefer to put honey over the whole pizza, not just the crust. The cheese becomes much sweeter.

They are the top of a very mediocre list.

I'm missing the problem here...

Too much cheese overpowers a pizza. I prefer east coast style pizza. Every time I travel to the New York area on business the first meal is almost always pizza. Thin crispy crust with a nice mixture of different cheeses to which gives it so much more flavor.
