Grayshirts?

Last year, I know that I was a little surprised when Ethan Tuftee ended up a grasyshirt signee--though with his injury, it made sense. Just looking at the roster, I'm wondering if one or more of our current commits might well be a grayshirt candidate as well. Any speculation on who that might (or might not) be?

Frankly, I'd guess that just about any of the Iowa kids committed are equally likely. Aside from Lichtenberg, who I'd like to see in the Jacobsen weight room as soon as possible.

Yes, he enrolled for Spring term.

Well, he's not enrolled, and we heard that he wouldn't back in November. I assume he'll play football next fall, then hope to transfer after getting his Associate's. Three years of eligibility.

I'm thinking that grayshirts might not be the best option for this year's class. What you are doing, in effect, is promising one of the 25 available scholarships from the '10 class. I realize that it is a promise and not a guarentee, but some coaches actually live up to their commitments. I am thinking that PR's staff, given a full year to recruit, can land 25 better prospects next year than whoever might be the 26th guy from this year.

I would agree with that. As well as in general terms--grayshirts don't make much sense to me, you're mortgaging a part of your future. But then, there might be one or two current commits that they could improve upon next year already.

I actually like grayshirts. It basically gets you six years out of a kid. I know it sounds silly, but you take a team full of sixth year players and you'll win a crapload of games. Now, I do realize that you are jeopardizing some schollies for the following year and that isn't always positive. However, somehow the scholarship situation manages to work itself out with kids that leave, quit, get injured, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing 2-3 grays a year.
