Will McDonald IV's talent always stood out, but rookie's path to Jets wasn't easy
In high school, McDonald worked a late-night fast-food job to help support his family. Now the defensive end is a first-round draft pick.
In Ames, McDonald quickly became a force. He was known for “terrorizing” practice, Rasheed [DL Coach] said. There was no off switch. Coaches had to tell him to calm down during walkthroughs, which are supposed to be low effort. “He’d go full speed on the first rep and he’d say, ‘Coach, I don’t know how to slow down,'” Rasheed said. “I’d say: Amen to that.”
“He was going 100 miles an hour,” [O'Rien] Vance said. The offensive linemen “hated him. That was just his No. 1 goal: To ruin their day.”
His first college game was at TCU, as a freshman in 2018. First play: strip-sack, fumble.
“We were just like: Yeah, he’s got it,” Vance said. “He’s one of those.
