Fran hasn't coached in 8 years, and he hasn't been in the NCAA tournament in a dozen years. I love the idea of calling him and seeking his advice. Not sure I"m crazy about him getting the job.

I would have been laughing at him too, had I no ties to the university or was not torqued about the previous call. It was quite funny to watch.

I doubt that list is our official list or anything, but I think Forbes and Montgomery are the best names on there. Those two have a good chance to be exciting.

I can promise you that wasn't Mark Montgomery. He was an assistant coach at Central Michigan in 2000. See post # 78 in this thread for more details.

My Top 5

Based on Jamie's history- he is looking a guy who can win and will do it with integrity. That means there will be no NCAA problems, good kids and a focus on the classroom. IMO that disqualifies Larry Eustachy. Not only does he have the baggage of his alcoholism WHILE at ISU, but the player turnover during the LE era matched the turnover we just saw under McDermott. LE also relied heavily on JUCO kids, not the recipe for stability.

I like some of the Big 10 assistant coaches mentioned by Paul. Each has tutored under a great head coach and runs a style of offense that blends running when possible, but strong half-court sets.

Montgomery - MSU
Gard - Wisky
Ray - Purdue

However, IMO the first choice should be Brian Gregory. He has head coaching experience and got his Dayton team to the NCAA tourney. He should be JP's first call, but I think Gregory will wait for a better job.

The darkhorse that I like is Tim Jankovich. He has a solid record at Illinois State and spent time at 5 Big 12 schools as an assistant.

I'm leaning towards JP going after an up and coming assistant from a successful program over a mid major head coach.

I think the mid major coaches that are willing to move are getting picked over at this stage.

Thus, I think the best coach possible will most likely be an up and coming assistant coach looking for his big break. I would take a hard look at the up and coming assistants like Paul Lusk at Purdue and find the best one available and give them their shot as a head coach.

Here's to hoping JP can find the next Coach K among the assistant coaching ranks.

Gregory is my first choice. Has done a good job at Dayton and won a game in the NCAA tournament as a lower seed (2009, #11 seed that beat #6 West Virginia in the first round).

Count me unimpressed by Gard. I do think Bo Ryan is a good coach, but historically he has underacheived in the NCAA tournament (he has lost a number of times to lower seeds, including most recently getting blown out by Cornell last season). I think we can do better than Gard. If I had to choose a Big Ten assistant to be our next coach, I would want Montgomery.

I thought of Fran last night. I like the guy, and he loves ISU...but it's been a long time since he coached. It would be interesting, and I wouldn't necessarily be against it.
