Golf in Ames.

AGCC would be my least favorite course in Ames. Pretty boring honestly. Veenker would be my favorite and Coldwater 2nd. As stated above, Honey Creek is probably the nicest course near Ames and is a great value.
Worse than Hackwood?

Homewood had a student special when I was in college. Something like $10/round. We'd sneak our own beer on and have a great time.
Took a golf class from Joan Gerhart (women’s golf coach) back in 1975. Homewood was the course we played. Fun course and at that time, we played it for next to nothing as a student.

Veenker is better than Coldwater. Honey Creek is better than Veenker. Otter in Ankeny and TCI in Polk City are better and within driving distance.

Lincoln Valley in State Center is super underrated, at least when I was playing it years ago. It’s a great 18 hole small town course only like 15-20 from Ames.

Anybody remember the golf course on old hwy 30 towards Nevada? I think they took it out when the ethanol plant was built. What was the name? Played there in the late 90s early 2000s

Being a member at a country golf has many privileges, like not really worrying about getting tee times and free range balls. But As many have said here, the course is fairly boring. It’s pretty flat, no real trouble on most hole.

Oaks closed years ago.
Yeah it’s been a housing development for years now. There was a particular dangerous hole on that course. One of my dad friends got hit by a ball. I believe there was a big hill sloping down towards the hole.

Veenker is a best maintained track in the Ames area. I think the course is extremely unfair. Coldwater would be my vote!
Veenker is a good test, many people hate it because of the all the trees. The greens are very tough. My only complaint about the course is many of the tee boxes are just in awful shape.

FWIW at the end of league this year I heard they had money to fix at least some of the tee boxes for next season. It is sorely needed.

Veenker is my favorite in Ames. Homewood is nice if you want to squeeze in a really quick round. AGCC is fine and has the perks of being a country club member if you’re looking for that.

That was a crazy hole you had to put a red flag up a tall pole when on the green because you could not see the green from the tee box.

Veenker was tough. I left ISU with 5 gallon pails of balls I picked up in the woods. Many hundreds of balls. And 1 diploma. And quite a lot of student loan debt....

Moved back here from Arizona and AG&CC is way less than where I played there. Just trying to find my best option for golf 2-3 times per week.
AGCC is indeed a bit uneventful. The nice thing about it though is that it's an easy walk if you're a walker and the course and range is almost always open. It has the best greens in Ames. Outside of Ames, other than ones previously mentioned, I enjoy Lincoln Valley in State Center. It's short and gets very dry in the Summer but the course layout stays interesting throughout the round.

Veenker is not easy. The funny part when I worked their after the 08 flood we redid the whole course. My Boss set it up so he could easily play fade shots. He also tightened most fwys.
I think the Par 5 on the back 9 "the beast" is the dumbest hole in golf ive ever played. Its so unfair.
