GODFREY: A pleasant surprise?

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

Godfrey just keeps getting better.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

He looked really in control tonight and it paid off, great play out of him and hopefully more nights like tonight to come from him.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

I'll award him an honorary double-double. He was great.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

He has the potential to be a fantastic rebounder. He still goes after it a little soft with one hand grabs rather than two hand authoritative rips. Tubby Smith calls White the best natural rebounder he has seen. I'm thinking Godfrey and White on the blocks is going to be a great combo, maybe Booker too.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

Considering that it was feared that Godsmack may not qualify to be here he's been more than a pleasant surprise. He probably won't start next year but he'll continue to be a major factor.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

Godfrey played very well, and much more under control than in the past. Needs to work on finishing at the rim and does not have a great shot. For a true freshman he had been very impressive, just as the Edge has. This team really needs his ability to rebound.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

With JVB gone. He will make a GREAT option to play along with Royce down low. It is going to be huge having those guys next year.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

If we're going to beat any teams with NBA level talent like KU and Baylor clearly have inside, we're going to have to play Ejim-Godfrey-VDB as 3-4-5 together more often. I'm comfortable with any of our 4 guards rotating with those 3.

Against teams with lesser talent we're better with a 3 guard offense, but to have a chance with long and big teams we need Godfrey and VDB on the court at the same time along with Ejim at 3 and none of them getting in foul trouble. It's a tall order but Godfrey's improvement tonight showed it's possible this year.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

Godfrey is a pleasant surprise this year. He's making mistakes, but they're "freshman mistakes" that will get sorted out eventually. He's bringing intensity into the games, and it seems like he's buying into Fred's "trust your teammates" philosophy.

I'll admit that I was very skeptical when we signed Godfrey, mainly because he was the last player signed by "the former ISU coach who shall not be mentioned". Under our former system, I figured that Godfrey wouldn't be here long enough to unpack all his suitcases. Thank God that he's proving me wrong.

Best case scenario for us would be if Godfrey improves at a reasonable rate during his time at ISU, but continues to be our "big spark off the bench" guy. Why? Well, while I think that Godfrey will develop into a Big 12 starter within the next year or two, I'm a greedy bastard who hopes that we've got so much talent on the team that Godfrey has to fight like hell to get minutes.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

He is like a mini Cato. After the all the players not living up the last few years any Fresh that comes in and helps the team win is a pleasent suprise.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

His post moves will improve as he gets experience. Like most bigs, his defense is ahead of his offense. I love the energy

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

He reminds me of a guy Iowa had come off the bench in the late 80s.
Kent Hill was a short burly post player recruited by Raveling. Explosive high energy guy that in spurts is a very effective post player. I think Godfrey and Railey will be a great combo for us off the bench the next 2 years behind White and Booker.

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

Clearly. One point and rebound shy of a double-double last night. Kid just works hard - love his effort and being in the right spot. So far, not hitting the freshman wall (Ejim looks to be a bit) - but he doesn't play as many minutes as Ejim.

This kid gets bigger in the offseason and we have someone we can really depend upon for the future.

Fun thing is, he's dependable now!

Re: GODFREY: A pleasent surprise?

agree that Ejim may be hitting a bit of a wall. It could be just a matter of who he's been facing.

ejim needs a rest. dude has been giving it up so not a surprise. it looks like jake might be hitting one a little as well. not sure how to handle that if your hoiberg.

Perhaps we could see more minutes of an Ejim, Godfrey, JVB front-court. Rotating Godfrey in more would give Ejim and the guards more time to rest, plus help us battle more inside.
Of course, in games like yesterday, it was not needed.
