Global Warming my butt

Well, another theory is that playing football causes cold weather. Teams start playing in August and play through February. Look at what's happened to temperatures since August. Just wait till after the Superbowl and the Pro Bowl game - it will start to warm up. You can go back several years to when they had the football strike - it was an exceptionally mild winter. The played football during the summer once (I don't remember what the leage was called) and it was one of the coldest summer on record. We just need to play football all year round all around the planet if it gets too warm.

Either that or we need a few volcanic explosions. They always cool the atmosphere for several years.

Of course, I could be wrong.

I think global warming is far from a scam; it is the real deal. My evidence is not that the majority of non-Big Oil scientists agree on the data, it's that both Michael Shermer (founder of Skeptic Magazine) and George W. Bush have recently come around to its reality. (Although, I still struggle on why GWB has...is he frantically investing in Big Ethanol or Big Switchgrass?)

So the fact that every top scientist in this field has concluded that humans ARE causing globbal warming doesn't have you people convinced? I'm sure those who think it is "no big deal" know better than those in the scientific community who study this everyday.

Uh, that would be a great point except for the fact that in the 1970's the scientific community who studied this every day were unanimously concerned about global cooling.

If you found it on the internet, it must be true.

So 17,000 scientist have signed a position. The TOP scientists in this field from around the world, working with the UN, just agreed that there is a 90% likely that humans are causing globbal warming.

Look, I can start a petition for anything and get signatures.

If you're insinuating that anything on the internet must be false, then you just refuted your own post.

I gave a list of 17000 names of scientists who do not believe we are causing global warming; you gave me zero. TOP scientists? Reminds me of the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

"We have men working on it."
"What men?"
"TOP men."

Very reassuring. Associating them with the UN only reduces their credibility. :nerd6bs:

Wow, what a thread. Wish I'd seen it earlier. Some mighty impressive points and conlusions from Cyclonepride and a good point about sunspots by Zdorr40. I've just got a few things to add:

The sun's output has been increasing. Some scientists have measured and found that the first 4 planets closest to the sun are all warming. Could it be as simple as that?

Others who study ice cores to try to learn about past climate have noted that CO2 levels have risen in the past after global warming was occurring, not the other way around.

Water vapor is by far the largest greenhouse gas dwarfing CO2.

Global warming is rising most rapidly in the coldest areas of Earth and affecting nighttime temps more than daytime. So, for example, Siberia at night is warming the most. Who thinks that's a bad thing? Global temps are cyclical and the warm temps historically have been associated with the good and productive times while the coldest periods have been connected to tough times and food shortages.

Sure we've had some warming and a fraction of it may be due to burning of fossil fuels, but imagine how much worse pollution and CO2 levels would be if we all went back to burning wood in the winter to stay warm. What ticks me off about this theory is the tendency of the "true believers" to want to shout down and silence anyone who would dare challenge their "settled science". Global warming as envisioned by Al Gore is the biggest "Chicken Little" theory of all time.

Just my opinion, but I think President Bush is softening his stance on several hot button issues to help garner support for his main focus, which is Iraq.

Yeah, and the tar in tobacco actually "pave" the way to better breathing!! :baffled5wh: Couldn't resist. :biggrin9gp:

Actually, the center of the globe is cooling. And if you read the UN report, you'll see that the majority of even "their" politically motivated scientists agree there is little man can do to reverse the effects of global warning.

I guess we could destroy the world economy by following Al "Scare for Profit" Gore's advice, but that would make it difficult to fly around the world in his Learjet and drive his multiple limos/SUVs.

Hey, if you won't trust politicians on anything they say in the United States, why would you trust ANYTHING that comes from the UN? Aren't they the biggest pseudo-government in the world?

Dubbya, is that you?

Interesting reading from Ed Wilson's weather blog at www.whotv.com:

The last couple of days we have reached into the weather history of Iowa. The debate is a red hot as the topic of global warming. We showed that the average temperature of Iowa has increased around 1.6 degrees since records started in the late 1870s. ((Earlier records were made in eastern Iowa.. but it was not until the late 1870s that we had a complete set of records that represented the entire state.))

So in a 130 year span, the average temp has increased by a staggering, earth shattering, alert the tree huggers, the world is coming to an end, 1.6 degrees? Sorry, guess I just don't see the alarm.

Has there been recent warm spells? Sure, in fact I think last year the entire globe was warmer than normal, but with the cold snap most of the country has had since the middle of January, in the end, it all balances out.

Remember the CU game over Thanksgiving break in '91?

Yup! Thank the Lord for insulated coveralls. It was a good thing that JTS had artificial turf on that day, as they were able to run the snow sweeper over the field during the game...

One of the first years I was down here in DSM, there was a spell, in Feb I believe, where it didn't get above 0 for a ridiculous number of days. That flat out sucked!

You could move down here...where the highs in summer aren't below 100 for a ridiculous number of days in a row...

Yep they just secured more gov't funding and job security by proving that humans ARE the cause of global warming. Things that make you go hmmmm.

Your credibility crashed and burned (which likley further contributed to global warming) the second you brought up the U.N.

Easy there, Clonefarmer. What's wrong with tossing a few logs on the fire?

His Theory:
Edgar Cayce, who said Atlantis will soon be rediscovered, prophesized that sun radiation increases are causing global warming on the oceans which releases much more carbonm dioxide thane man who is only adding 5% to the mix and it is not the volcanos under water adding heat even though we will see a pole reversal in near future since the magnetic areas of the crust are quickly changing prior to the 27000 year flip which causes tidal waves and major earthquakes and lots of spewing volcanos which can only be directly blamed on the heavy increase in industrilization in China although we prefer to think it was the EIU fans erupting at Kinnick adding all the global warming. Next subject/thread closed/no rebuttals from EIU.

Do something the scaremeisters don't want you to: Think
By Jack Kelly

Trofim Lysenko was a Soviet agronomist who denied the existence of genes. The characteristics of plants were determined by their environment, he said.

This was poppycock, but Lysenko's theory met with favor with Josef Stalin. Lysenkoism became dogma in the Soviet Union. This led to a predictable decline in Soviet biology, and an official Soviet repudiation of Lysenko in 1964.

But Lysenkoism lives on in Oregon, where Gov. Ted Kulongoski wants to fire the state climatologist because Prof. George Taylor doesn't think the modest warming we've experienced is due primarily to human activities. Dr. David Legates, Delaware's state climatologist, also is under pressure to make his science more Politically Correct.

Dr. Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Britain, thinks 2007 may be the warmest year ever recorded. The British Meteorological Office thinks there is a 60 percent chance that Dr. Jones is right.

When you learn that the 10 warmest years ever recorded all have been since 1994, you might get as scared as the global warming alarmists want you to be.

But first do something they don't want you to do: think. According to the data the Climatic Research Unit collects, the warmest year on record was 1998. That means it hasn't gotten warmer since then. All the data for 2006 aren't in yet, but it won't be as warm as it was in 2005, and may not be as warm as 2003.

To say the earth is as warm as its ever been since the invention of the thermometer isn't as scary as alarmists think. The mercury thermometer was invented by Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1714. That was in the middle of the Little Ice Age (1350-1900). Of course temperatures are warmer now than they were then. Dr. Bob Carter, a paleoclimate researcher at James Cook University in Australia, notes that for most of the last six million years, average global temperatures were as much as five degrees Celsius warmer than they are today.

As each new piece of evidence weakens their argument, global warming alarmists try to shut off debate.

They claim a consensus which does not exist. The National Registry of Environmental Professionals took a survey last November, which indicated two thirds of its members think global warming is a serious problem. But a third do not.

Skeptics are, global warming alarmists say, a "fringe" who are paid by CO2-spewing corporations to express doubt. But numbered among the skeptics are some of the world's most renowned climatologists, such as Richard Lindzen of MIT and Patrick Michaels of the University of Virginia. All have better credentials than does the divinity school dropout from whom alarmists take their cues.

Alarmists never mention that the vast majority of funding for climate scientists comes from government, or that skeptics are highly unlikely to receive research grants.

"Follow the money," said Alabama state climatologist John Christie, a professor at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. "To justify their funding, they have to show a huge problem."

You couldn't tell by reading the news accounts of it that the forthcoming report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is less alarmist than was its 2001 report. For instance, in 2001, the IPCC said melting ice could raise sea levels over the next hundred years by as much as three feet. The range the IPCC offers in this report is from 7 to 23 inches. Al Gore continues to talk about a sea rise of 20 feet, which should say all that needs to be said about his credibility.

This year's report also has dispensed with the infamous "hockey stick" graph which purported to show that temperatures in 2001 were the highest since the time of Christ. This is a left-handed acknowledgment of the existence of the Medieval Warm Period (800-1300) when temperatures were warmer than they are today.

The "hockey stick" was a fraud with a purpose. In 1995, Douglas Deming, a climate scientist at the University of Oklahoma, published a paper in the journal Science showing modest warming in North America over the last 150 years.

"A major person working in the area of climate change sent me an astonishing email that said: 'we have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period,'" Prof. Deming told William Tucker, who is writing a book about global warming.

A reporter for National Public Radio also called and offered to interview him, Dr. Deming said, but only "if I would state that the warming was due to human activity. When I refused to do so, he hung up on me."

I understand that "Global Warming" (not that I believe it's all it's cracked up to be) is a cumulative effect and not proven by isolated incidents, but if someone on this thread is gonna argue that the last two summers of above average temperatures are proof that the earth is indeed getting warmer, then this winter has to be the antithesis of that statement. After all, it was reported today that if all things continue to hold, this will be the coldest February on record in the Quad Cities.

How 'bout them apples?
