Global Warming my butt

1. Most scientists do not believe human activities threaten to disrupt the Earth’s climate. More than 17,000 scientists have signed a petition circulated by the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine saying, in part, “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.” (Go to www.oism.org for the complete petition and names of signers.) Surveys of climatologists show similar skepticism.

If you found it on the internet, it must be true.

So 17,000 scientist have signed a position. The TOP scientists in this field from around the world, working with the UN, just agreed that there is a 90% likely that humans are causing globbal warming.

Look, I can start a petition for anything and get signatures.

Information is rampant if you know where to look. Read the text.......they have agreed that it is 90% likely that human activity is aggravating global warming. Meaning it is happening with or without us.

Look, I agree that we should be taking all the steps we can to protect our world and it's environment, but the funding for all these studies come from people with an agenda. The leading advocate for human caused global warming has admitted publicly that they are exaggerating things, but that the end justifies the means. No one cares if you talk about a beetle that risks extinction because of human activity. So they picked a topic which would get attention.

You really need to read these articles carefully. Here's an example. The other day, there was a headline on MSNBC that said Indonesia will lose 2000 islands to the ocean by 2030 due to global warming. Sounds scary, right? Until you read further and find that these "islands" are currently about a foot above sea level. Which means they are probably underwater at high tide anyway.

I'm still open to all possibilities here, but I am not about to sit at the top of the fish tank and let the media spoonfeed me my information like a guppy.

I just find it interesting Cyclonepride that you point only to one side as having an agenda. Concerns about greenhouse warming go as far back as the mid 80's (I should know I wrote 20-page paper on the subject for my Political Science class in college back then) and one of the main reason it has taken 20 years for this issue to receive the attention it now has is because companies like Exxon Mobil hired "scientists" to show that humans had zero affect on the warming of the earth's atmosphere and oceans. http://money.cnn.com/2007/01/25/magazines/fortune/pluggedin_gunther_exxonmobil.fortune/index.htm

All in an effort to ensure they could keep padding there bank accounts.

Remember the CU game over Thanksgiving break in '91?

Wow, now that was cold. AND, I might add, the smallest crowd I've ever seen for an ISU home game. They didn't even take tickets.

Next day in the paper they had the attendance at something like 8,000. My arse! I had my choice of seats at the 50, with the option of wearing a headset on the sideline! :wink0st:

One of the first years I was down here in DSM, there was a spell, in Feb I believe, where it didn't get above 0 for a ridiculous number of days. That flat out sucked!

Didn't Mobil Exxon or some other major energy player just break with an "Anti-global warming" group?

The question I have being noneducated on this issue, what caused the ice-age and have not temps been increasing since then?

Aliens Chad, aliens. :rofl8yi:

The weather has been getting warmer on earth for two million years. Remember a little thing called the "ICE AGE". Remeber that. Well that was before we were even around. So I don't really think we have anything to do with it getting hotter.

I personally don't recall the game, but if it's the one I think you're talking about - I have a friend that's told me about it many times (he's also a member here).

Said the players were serving fans in the stand hot chocolate, no one really sat down - just huddled together and moved up and down the stands following the action on the field.

I would've loved to have been there for that. I'm dying for a game where there's a good 6 inches of snow on the ground before game time and it starts snowing like crazy at kickoff and doesn't stop until the end of the game.

I'm very jealous of Denver, Buffalo, New England, etc - fans that get to go to these games.

When you have to dig snow in order to just get into your seat and sat down - you know you're having fun.

This coming from a guy that really doesn't like cold weather. But I have a yearning to attend a blizzard game.

That's exactly right. And just think of the recruiting class Iowa State's going to have once Miami's underwater. :biggrin9gp:

Aggravating is another word for accelerating in this case. No doubt the planet is warming with or without human effects. If it wasn't, we would all be covered in ice to near the tropics. What concerns me is that humans have caused the earth to warm a lot faster than "normal" and have done so in a small amount of time relatively.

Is this a politically topic? No doubt. Are there groups on both sides funding studies to spin it one way or the other? Absolutely. But is it real that people are causing the earth to warm? I believe so.

I don't know about the hot chocolate. We sat in the west stands to try and stay out of the wind and the CU players weren't offering any refreshments.

My best memory, aside from the fact we dang near won, was the snow drift in the SE upper deck. I mean the whole end two or three seconds were buried and then some. A couple kids were the lone souls up there. Just after the start of the game, they disappeared under the snow at the bottom rows. About the 3rd quarter, popped out after tunneling about 2/3 the way up and across. Just these couple little dots sitting in a sea of white.

Not a bad observation.

Of course, I don't think warming has been occuring at a rate in excess of 1 degree per century for the past million years or so.

Trend might be the key here.

Yup, that's the same game, I'm sure of it.

I was in the club section seating for that game. Yeah I am a wuss but I watched most of it from inside.

I don't trust big oil, or most large corporations any more than you do. I'm really interested in the subject, and when I get interested in a subject, I make sure to get all the information I can from both sides of the issue. I am convinced that global warming is mostly a natural process from the research that I have done.

The most compelling article I have read is from a professor at MIT (sorry, I don't have that one) and he stated that the cause is very much in doubt, and that the results of many studies have been buried in the political process because most scientists who disagree with the environmentalist cause lose their funding stream.

The other compelling argument comes from the nature of the statements released by studies like the one just done by the UN. I would just urge everyone to read the wording very carefully, because you will find that in order to get that all of those scientists to agree, they include "likely" or human activity is "contributing to" global warming.

The other factor rarely mentioned is the urbanization of society, where large population centers have become the norm. It stands to reason that largely populated, urban areas with large amounts of concrete are going to register higher on average. Anyone who has gone outside of town on a summer night will have noticed this.

A third reason that I have recently read is a theory that the irregular elliptical orbit of the Earth is the cause, as the Earth over very long periods of time, is closer to, or further from the sun. I'm trying to find more information on that theory.

The US has taken a lot of criticism about refusing to sign the Kyoto accords, but what has not been widely reported is that those accords as written exempted third world and developing countries from any standards whatsoever. These countries are polluting like we did 80 years ago, burning coal and having very lax environmental protection laws.

I just read the actual report, and you find the most strongly worded parts in future predictions. You can find it in the Washington post link posted earlier. About half way down, they assess the likelihood of human cause for several things in a chart. There is only one current condition that they say is likely caused by human activity.

Overall though, the crux of the matter is that regardless of the cause, we have a responsibility to control pollution and the damage we cause by our activities.

What nobody is mentioning is the recent increase in sunspot activity. These sunspots are essentially nuclear explosions on the surface of the sun which in turn beat on the earth with massive amounts of radiation. The sun is actually burning hotter because of this.

Oh my god the sun is going to burn out... the sun is going to burn out!!!

This thread is awesome! Where else can you remember cold Clone games all while reading a bunch of political mumbo jumbo trying to convience Americans they are bad for the world and the einvironment.

And whoever mentioned Al Gore, come on?!?! The guy and his "group" took 8 cars while driving 5 blocks in New York for the premier of his movie. He is making a boat load of money trying to scare you into something he can give you "scientific facts" to prove.... The average temp of the planet is going up.

For those of you following the end of the world. It has been just over a year since Al Gore gave us 10 years to live....

i don't know whether or not there is global warming or not, but i do know that i have to work outside in this crap all day, every day. god i can't wait till april and some decent weather. we got lucky through most of january, now god is kicking me in the junk.

Yeah, Al Gore is part of the problem. I appreciate that he wants to help the environment, but the dude might as well wear a sandwich board proclaiming the end of the world. Too much of what is passed off as fact is actually theory and speculation. That is my main point.
