Garza is a stat stuffer. He's basically James Harden. He'll put up huge numbers on the stat sheet, but he's a liability on defense. His teams will be good, but never dominant because of that.

Also, come tournament time, that elbow he uses to get space will start getting called and he'll find it much harder to put up those points. Iowa wont see the second weekend.

He isn’t very good on defense that’s for sure, but I wouldn’t go as far as “liability”. He also has to put up those numbers in order to win (also Harden is actually a pretty decent defender if you watch the NBA and one of the greatest offensive players of all time lol)

Were we like this when the hawkeyes were better at football and we were at basketball? If so, it’s not good.

From the few visits I made to HN back in the Hoiberg/Rhoads era, I suspect the answer to that was yes. Our trolls were pretty bad over there generally speaking.

Luka is a more efficient scorer. Niang being surrounded by all that talent also means that he didn’t get nearly the attention Garza does.

I think college basketball as a whole is considerably down even from the Niang era. Not sure what it is but I just haven't been able to get into college basketball this year, and I have been able to be a huge college basketball fan the past few years where ISU struggled, so it's not that.

Garza will win the award, deservedly so, but there are really no other stars in college basketball this year

I think Dosunmo (sp?) is having a more impressive season

Niang made it to two Sweet 16's. Was in the NCAA tourney all four years. 2 Big 12 Titles. All American. NBA career. Garza has scored more points and made the tourney, what ...2 times?

He actually hasn’t been terrible in it recently. But Iowa plays a lot of zone and he isn’t too bad inside. Poor defender, yes. Liability? I mean everybody on Iowa’s defensively would he considered a liability so pick your poison there.

That sounds ignorant of you. 6 years was a long time ago (for you, probably) but you should remember that teams would strategize around stopping him to beat us. He was the cog that made the offense work, even if he wasn't always scoring all the points.

I second this. There are tons of POY winners that ended up as huge busts, but they still went in the first round. Everything I've read about Garza recently is that he's a 2nd rounder, at best, and a Euro league guy, at worst.

He’s going to win the KAJ 2 times straight, he’s going to win the Wooden, he will be a 2 time first team consensus all American, he will be a 2 time unanimous first team all big 10 player, and he has set multiple records. When I think of basketball in Iowa, for some reason Monte Morris always comes to mind. I absolutely loved his game. So good on offense, created, distributed the ball so well, and made some really clutch plays in his career. Just tenacious on defense, too. I usually don’t cheer for clones but when the Nuggets play I always root for Morris to do well. He’s still so much fun to watch.
