Garza declares for the NBA

Some of you don't get it..There is not staying in draft or not staying draft...He can go thru entire draft and if he's not drafted he can return to Iowa. If he's drafted he's gone..
He can sign with a team though. He doesn't have to get drafted to end up on the roster.

A prospects dad heavily involved in his kids decision to stay in the draft or return to college? Why would that be abnormal?

I don't necessarily think it is abnormal. But I think the conventional wisdom has been he will be back and I'm not sure that will be the case if Frank sees some money to be made-- which I should note is also not necessarily a bad thing.

The NBA 20 years ago Garza would have probably been a top 5 pick if not no worse than top 10 but it's a different kind of league now. Just look at the top 10 picks from 2000 and you could easily see him going in the top 5 that year as 5 of the top 10 picks were some of the most dominate big men in college basketball. In hindsight that draft turned out to be full of busts and disappointments. Lot of guys that had decent careers as role players but no real stars. Just 3 combined all-star appearances from players in that draft all in 2004 and just 1 All-NBA performer in Michael Redd who was selected 43rd overall.

I doubt he gets feedback that he'll be drafted in the first round but I do think he gets a look in the league at some point. He may not fit what the NBA wants these days but you can't teach size and a nearly 7 footer that knocked down 39 3 pointers last year at over 35% clip is going to get some opportunities to play professionally.

There's a deadline, usually a few weeks before the draft, that players have to decide to stay in or return to college. I don't think you can go through draft night and retain your eligibility if you don't get selected.

Unless you are a Lottery pick there's never a guarantee of a Roster spot..lol..Even then some lotto kids go G league.

Sounds like talking points from his Dad IMO..

You get a guaranteed contract of at least 2 years if you are picked anywhere in the 1st round.

Agents will be permitted to pay for meals and transportation for players and their families during the agent selection process and for meetings with pro teams, if changes are made to existing agent acts and state laws.

Players can also now return to school after going undrafted without losing eligibility, but only if they participated in the NBA combine.

So if im reading this right players can only go thru draft and return if undrafted if and only if they attended the Combine?

I could be off but I thought that last part was adopted by the NBA but not by the NCAA.

Garza is the type of player who would have been a top 10 pick in the 90s or early 00s.

His improved outside shot is what might help him most, it's the thing that can offset his foot speed on defense in terms of keeping him on the floor.

He's the ideal college player now if he comes back because monster stats for a guy who doesn't automatically leave for the smart money. Not unlike Georges was for us really, other than the fact that Georges was our best clutch scorer all four years and Garza did need the freshman year to develop a bit.

I’m not seeing anyone not getting it. Pretty sure everyone is well aware of what the new rules are.

30th pick and 31st pick may be be the most cruel cutoff line in all of American sports.

We're talking about maybe 18 to 20 American kids. You could be the 19th best kid in America and get a guaranteed contract and the 20th best gets life in the G league proving ground.

I don't think any widely played American sport is that competitive in terms of a career at the highest level in the US. Everything else is either a larger group or a more gradual salary reward.

The 20th best young golfer or tennis player in the country is in a similar situation to the 21st best. In football or baseball there are hundreds drafted onto rosters and systems behind those prospects.

These are unprecedented times. I think there will be kids back on campus next fall and games played, but who knows.

Garza was a top 3 college player this year based on what he did on court. I realize the NBA oozes over potential, but Garza's skills on the court are unquestioned. He has the unusual blend of great post moves, but can also pop-out and be a high volume 3 point shooter and shoot about the same rate as the average guard. Add to that he is a solid rebounder.

IMO some team will take a chance on him in the 1st round.

This draft will be unique, because I could see fewer international players making themselves available for the draft. Also, I believe the 2021 draft will include HS seniors and it would not surprise me if they make up 30-50% of guys drafted.

It helped Georges in a similar situation.

I won't be shocked if someone takes him though given he shows some promise as a shooter. (not saying his outside shot lights the world on fire but it's well above average for a 7 footer out of college)
