Gary Barta Timeline

So what is the rough estimate price tag on what Iowa has had to pay out in contract buyouts and lawsuits under Barta's leadership? Will be interesting to see if any paycuts or layoffs are announced soon too since Iowa did not proactively reduce some payroll like ISU did early in the pandemic and now they have another $1.1 mil to eventually pay out for someone no longer on the payroll.

10. Mike Scott Lawsuit (2013)
"Back in 2012, Iowa had lost a female track assistant. After the UI struck out on two candidates -- the administration rejected hiring a man for the job, and a woman candidate took another job during the delay -- it filled the position on a one-year appointment with Mike Scott. The following year, the job was re-posted, with the posting alleged by Scott to have been rewritten to take him out of contention so that Iowa could hire a woman. Internal email from coach Larry Wieczorek indicated that the eventual hire, a relatively less-qualified woman, was driven by the administration's mandate to hire a female candidate. Scott sued for gender discrimination, and settled for $200,000. "

11. Red White and Blue vs. Blackout (2013)
"On Nov. 2, 2013, Iowa issued red, white and blue poms to honor veterans during the Hawkeyes’ football game against Wisconsin. The school also held its annual “Blackout” game that day. The blue poms and black-colored clothing washed out, and the television audience saw mostly red and white poms.

“We can always do better,” Barta said. “That red pom-pom concept, great intention. Red, white and blue, we’re going to celebrate America and the red overwhelmed and it backfired. I was fully aware of what we were trying to do. It didn’t work. I take full responsibility, and we’ll try other things."

12. Roy Marble Ceremony (2014):
"A grass roots effort to honor Roy Marble came to fruition this March. Marble, the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball, was stricken with stage four cancer in summer of 2014. Instead of retiring his jersey or his number, Iowa chose a two-minute halftime ceremony without an accompanying video montage or letting Marble speak. Many fans voiced their displeasure vocally and on social media platforms."

13. Griesbaum/Meyer Lawsuit (2014-2017):

"In the middle of Iowa football media day, and just weeks before the field hockey season is to begin, Barta announces that he has abruptly fired field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum. Rumors quickly surface that the firing was due to complaints by players of mistreatment, specifically verbal abuse.

Two weeks prior to Griesbaum's firing, Barta held a meeting with staff to discuss the findings of an internal review of the program, prompted by those player allegations. At that meeting, he assured attendees (including Griesbaum) that Griesbaum would remain field hockey coach. Barta specifically stated that Griesbaum had not violated university policy, and apologized to her for the internal review. Then he fired her, and in classic Barta fashion, wouldn't tell anyone why. "My decision to terminate Coach Griesbaum was based on the results of a comprehensive review of the field hockey coach and her program," Barta stated. He told current and former players that the firing was due to the results of the internal review "and other factors.""

"The Iowa -- and, soon, national -- field hockey community rallied to Griesbaum's side, especially given that yelling has never been grounds for dismissal in men's sports."

"But when Barta cited "other factors," it opened the door to rampant speculation (sound familiar) as to what he meant. And what Griesbaum, her partner Jane Meyer (a UI athletics administrator, at least at that time) and her attorneys believed was that "other factors" were Griesbaum's sexual orientation. And so Griesbaum sued. And when Barta moved Meyer to a non-athletics department without any stated rationale or documented poor performance, Meyer filed her own lawsuit for retaliation."

"And so Meyer's lawsuit went to trial in Des Moines in late April 2017, with Barta openly confident in victory. But the jury balked at complaints of Meyer's ineptitude by a panel of male coaches, found that UI -- Barta, really -- discriminated against her based on her sexual orientation, and awarded Meyer $1.43 million in damages. Within three weeks, Iowa had settled any appeals of the Meyer verdict and Griesbaum's claim (and rapidly upcoming trial) for a total of $6.5 million. A jury of Iowans found that Gary Barta discriminated against at least one woman based on her sexual orientation, and Iowa paid over $5 million to avoid having a second jury do the same. And yet, Gary Barta somehow, inexplicably, remained employed. When asked about the verdict, Barta basically said they lost because he didn't write enough stuff down."

14. Illegal Ticket Lottery (2014):
"Last July, Iowa officials offered a promotion to give free tuition to selected Iowa students who buy season tickets. It was suspended a day later to verify its legality by Johnson County and state officials. The promotion later was amended to allow all students to enter the tuition giveaway, not just those who bought tickets."

15. Ferentz Contract Part 2 (2016):

"Barta extends the Ferentz contract for another ten years, on basically the same absurd terms."

16. Fran's Secret Extension (2017):

"Barta extends Fran McCaffery's contract, doubling his buyout to more than $10 million and increases his pay, on the heels of a lackluster 19-15 season and second-round NIT loss. In impeccable Barta fashion, the extension is signed in secret and not disclosed publicly, until Scott Dochterman FOIA'd some documents and found it in late January 2018. When asked why he offered and executed a secret multi-million dollar contract extension, Barta said, “I could’ve announced it. I chose not to. There’s really nothing in it to hide. It’s fair for people to criticize.”"

17. Gary Dolphin Suspension (2019):

"Wednesday marked their first public comments since Dolphin was suspended for using the term "King Kong" to describe the play of Maryland's Bruno Fernando, who is black, after the Terrapins’ win over Iowa on Feb. 19. On Friday, Learfield’s Hawkeye Sports Properties suspended Dolphin for the remainder of the basketball season. It was announced prior to Wednesday’s press conference that Dolphin will be reinstated beginning with 2019 spring football practices.

Among the criticisms surrounding the incident was the lack of swift public comments from Barta. Aside from an unsigned Iowa athletics department statement released Friday afternoon supporting the suspension, there was silence.

Until Wednesday (February 27th).

“I’m fully aware of the desire of both (the media) and the fans to have wanted more information more quickly,” Barta said. “I apologize that it’s taken us this long, and maybe we can learn in the future some things we can do to speed this up. But I also want to give you some context.""

19. Racial Tensions in Football Program? (2020):
To be seen how the U of I handles this. Barta has been quiet and recently told Pat Hardy he is not doing individual interviews at this time.
Should inc,use ISU locker room incident w the notification to other schools.

I believe it's a little less than 8 million dollars.

I don't think the notification came from Barta but I suppose it did come from someone under him. Do you have documentation of what went down?

@Jeremy do you think the guys that run https://americaneedsequality.com/ will put a counter or meter tracking all the hush money Iowa has paid off over the years?

After reading all of these, I am ever grateful for Jamie Pollard. And they've kept him there for fourteen years!!!

By contrast, we only kept Bruce the Despicable for 6 years.

Seemed like 6, but was actually less than 5.

Hired Nov. 1, 2000 (after ISU became bowl-eligible, though he liked to claim that feather as his).
Contract ended June 30, 2005, and status changed to Exempt P&S (annual).
Tendered resignation on Aug. 8, 2005.

Pollard was hired on Sept. 19, 2005, with an effective start date of Oct. 1.

Still too long.

And we were probably better off from his resignation until Jamie started than if he would have still been in the chair.

I was a freshman that fall.

Pollard came by the band practice field the week he was hired and introduced himself to all of us.

It was nice he was trying to build relationships from the start with everybody in Ames, including even relatively ancillary concerns of his main job, like the marching/pep bands and the cheer squad.

There are probably a lot of people on CF that want to build relationships with the cheer squad...;)

He did the "resign but stick around until the new guy is hired" thing, so there was about 6 weeks of extra-lame duck in there.
